Tubshower diverter valve problem

tub/shower diverter valve problem

After new fixtures were installed for a tub and shower, the wall-mounted diverter valve only diverted half the water to the showerhead. After several days it suddenly turned into no more than a trickle from the showerhead. The old fixtures had worked perfectly, but were replaced to modernize the bathrooms appearance. Plumbers attached the new fixtures to the old copper pipes and there are no leaks. I am sure the diverter valve was not installed too tightly and the washers, etc., appear in perfect shape as they should be since they are all new. What could the problem be and how can I fix it myself? Thanks! Have you tried removing the showerhead? It may be full of debris that travelled thru the valves and pipes after they were reassembled and worked on.
