Unstick Piston Rings

Piston rings -- there are five of them: one set of three rings and two sets of one ring on each piston -- ride in grooves on the pistons. The rings keep the oil from getting into the exhaust and aid in maintaining compression. The tolerances are small -- they are designed to be a small fraction of an inch away from the cylinder wall. When your vehicle emits blue smoke (burns oil), the rings usually need to be replaced. If the rings stick, the pistons won't move in the cylinder -- the engine is frozen.

Instructions

1. Label the spark plug wires. Pull the wires off the plugs. Remove the plugs with the spark plug socket.

2. Squeeze about 1/2 ounce of oil or silicone spray into each cylinder. Allow the engine to sit for 24 hours. Attempt to turn the crankshaft with a socket on the crankshaft bolt. If there is too much resistance, don't force it.

3. Add another 1/2 ounce of oil or spray if the engine does not turn. Allow it to sit for another 24 hours. Attempt to turn the engine. Repeat a third time if necessary.

4. Turn the engine over three or four times via the crankshaft pulley bolt. Add another 1/2 ounce of oil or spray. Turn the engine over, then turn it over again in a few hours. If the engine turns easily, reinstall the plugs and wires and start the engine. Listen carefully for noise -- do not rev it up.

5. Idle the engine for one half hour. If you don't hear noise and it stops smoking the rings are unstuck and did not break.

Tips Warnings

The engine may continue to smoke for a few hours, but you should see less and less smoke as time goes by -- this depends on how much oil or spray you added to the cylinders.
