Repair A Single Handle Leaky Shower Faucet

Worn-out shower cartridges may not turn properly, causing leaks from gaps.

Shower handles function to turn a shower cartridge that controls the flow of water from the shower body. A cartridge is also called a stem assembly. When the stem assembly starts to leak, the washers may be worn on the stem. To stop the leak, you will have to remove the entire stem assembly and replace it. Most stem assemblies are single pieces that are cheap to replace, making replacing individual washers unnecessary.

Instructions

1. Turn off the water supply to the shower by shutting off the mains.

2. Remove the cover from the faucet handle by prying it up with a pocket knife. Look for a hex screw at the base of the handle if it does not have a cover and remove the hex screw using a hex screwdriver to remove the handle.

3. Remove the screw from the handle using a Phillip's-head screwdriver and pull the handle off the cartridge behind it.

4. Pull up the retaining clip at the top of the cartridge by sliding a flathead screwdriver underneath it and pulling the clip out. Remove the washer from the end of the stem by pulling it off.

5. Place the cartridge removal device that is packaged with your replacement cartridge over the cartridge and turn it using a wrench until the cartridge is removed.

6. Align the new cartridge inside the valve and push it in until it is flush. Attach the handle, turn on the water and test the shower.
