Remove A Sliding Shower Door Frame

Get rid of that old sliding shower door frame.

Sliding shower door frames don't last forever and when the time comes to remove it, you can do it yourself. A sliding shower door frame is composed of four main parts: the header, the two sides and the base. The sliding doors fit into the tracks of the header and the base. The only things holding the frame in place are screws and caulking. Once the doors, screws and caulk are removed, the frame can be dismantled.

Instructions

1. Close the sliding doors. Lift one of the doors up so the bottom lifts out of the base track. Lower the door so the top slides out of the header. Repeat this process for removing the second door.

2. Hit the underside of the header track with a rubber mallet at both ends until it is freed from the side braces. Remove the header from the frame. You may have to work it back and forth until the ends clear the shower walls.

3. Undo the screws that hold the side frames to the shower walls, using an electric screw gun.

4. Cut the silicone caulking along the side frames and base track. Use a utility knife to cut the caulking on both sides of the frame where it touches the walls and the tub.

5. Tap the side frames with the rubber mallet until they come free from the caulking. Tap the base track frame until it comes free.

6. Scrape up the remaining caulk with a razor window scraper or putty knife. Use a rag soaked in rubbing alcohol to rub off all caulk residue.
