What Are The Causes Of Urine Odor

While many people don't pay attention to their urine, the color and odor of your urine can tell you a great deal about your health. Strong urine odor can indicate any of a series of problems with your health, some of them simple and other ones more serious. If urine odor is an ongoing problem for you, it is important to see your doctor about what the underlying cause might be.

Vitamin Supplements

Vitamin supplements are one common cause of strong urine. Urine that is dark in color or smells strongly can be the result of vitamin supplements. If you take vitamins, especially a B-complex vitamin, and you are noticing strong urine, don't fret. Drinking more water may help alleviate the issue.

Medication Side Effects

If you are taking some other type of prescription or over-the-counter medication and you notice that your urine has a strong odor, check out the side effects of the medication. Many medicines have urine odor listed as a side effect; if this is the case, drinking more water may help to dilute your urine. If the issue persists after you finish with the medication, talk to your doctor about other causes.

Bodily Infections

Urinary tract infections and bladder infections are another one of the more common causes of urine odor. These infections can only be treated by a doctor, and although they do have other symptoms such as pain during urination and abdominal discomfort, strong urine odor is one of the primary indications of the presence of such an infection.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a serious medical condition that affects the way the body processes sugars. For this reason, one of the side effects of this condition is often strong urine. If you are experiencing side effects such as frequent urination and strong urine odor, you may want to get tested for diabetes.

Dehydration

Strong urine odor is not always due to a medical condition. Sometimes foul-smelling urine can be an indication of a very simple problem -- not drinking enough water. Too much coffee, alcohol or juice and not enough water can lead to urine that is strong in color and odor.
