Fix Dirt In A House Refrigerator'S Drinking Water

Discard the water from the first several batches dispensed if the refrigerator was recently installed.

The water from a refrigerator is often a primary source of water for drinking and cooking in many homes. The water enters the refrigerator through the water line connected to the unit and is passed through the water filter before exiting the dispenser on the front of the refrigerator or freezer door when the lever is pressed. While this water generally tastes and smells fine, if there is dirt present in the water from the refrigerator, there are a few troubleshooting steps that should be taken to fix the problem.

Instructions

1. Disconnect the water line from the refrigerator, located in the rear of the unit. Clean the inlet screen inside the hose and the connection point between the hose and the refrigerator with a damp cloth to remove dirt or debris.

2. Locate the water filter cartridge in the refrigerator. It is commonly located in the upper portion of the refrigerator compartment or in the bottom grille on the front of the unit.

3. Push the release button next to the filter cartridge to release the cartridge, if applicable. Turn the cap on the filter cartridge counterclockwise and pull to take the filter out of the refrigerator. If there is no button, cover the existing filter with a towel and turn counterclockwise while gently pulling to remove the filter from the refrigerator.

4. Remove the end caps and packaging from the new filter, which can be purchased at many hardware or home retail stores. Place the filter grille cap on the rear end of the filter prior to inserting if the filter fits in the bottom grille.

5. Insert the new filter with the arrows on the cartridge or the words facing up or forward. Push gently while twisting a quarter turn clockwise to fully place the filter into the refrigerator.

6. Push the Reset button on the control panel, if applicable.

7. Place a large container under the water dispenser and press down on the lever. Hold it down for five seconds and then release it. Wait five seconds and then press down on the lever again. Continue this process until water starts to flow consistently. Dispense water for two or three minutes. This flushes the new filter and removes any residual dirt that may be present in the water lines after causing the original problem.
