Specifications Of Class A Motorhomes

Class A motor homes look a lot like music band tour buses.

Class A motor homes are larger RVs built on a bus or truck chassis. They look much like music band tour buses. There is no over the cab area like in class C motor homes. The driver sits right up front just like a bus driver. Class A motor homes are typically the most spacious of all the RV classes. However, because of their size and long wheelbase they can be challenging to drive on twisting roads, and in tight spaces.

Luxury Class A Motor Home

Newell produces custom luxury motor homes. On the inside, these RVs look much more like exclusive first class cruise ships, than something to sleep in at a campground. The P2000i can be made any length from 39 to 45 feet. Buyers can choose from several standard floor plans or have a completely custom one designed. For example, the F6 floor plan for a 2011, 45 foot long P2000i features granite floors in the living area, two bathrooms, side slideouts and a stacked washer and dryer pair. All fixtures and appliances are high-end brand names, such as the Sub-Zero fridge in the kitchen.

Green Motor Homes

The solar panels on some green RVs let them camp in places without electric hookups.

New York Times travel writer Linda Baker reported on the greening of RVs in her November 2008 article. Specifications that make a motor home green include converting to biodiesel, adding solar panels, LED lighting, composting toilets and rainwater harvesting systems. A 2007 industry survey reported that "about 18 percent of RV owners are already using solar panels." Some owners are converting their engines to run on used cooking oil. While this is a much cheaper fuel option than gas or diesel, it can take some work to find enough fuel.

Entry Level Class A Motor Home

The Georgetown Series by Forest River are entry level Class A motor homes. They range in size from 28 feet, 10 inches long for the 280DS to 35 feet, six inches for the 34D. All models have 50 gallon fresh water tanks, and 41 gallon black and gray water tanks. Buyers can choose optional rear vision video cameras. These cameras are a good option for the first time RV owner, or one upgrading from a smaller camper-van style motor home.
