Designed for professional broadcasts and filmmaking, the Sony PMW-EX3 is an HD camcorder with an interchangeable lens system, time code capability, an 8-pin remote control hookup, and a shoulder mount for easy operation. The PMW-EX3 also has inputs and outputs for connecting to professional monitoring equipment and professional audio systems.
Resolution
The PMW-EX3 uses three CMOS sensors to get accurate color, dedicating one sensor to each of the three primary colors. The sensors have a resolution of 1920 by 1080, and can record in 1080P, 1080i, and 720P. The video system can be switched between the North American NTSC standard and the European PAL standard. At full 1920 by 1080 resolution in NTSC mode, the camcorder can record 60 interlaced or 30 progressive frames per second. In PAL, it can record 50 interlaced or 25 progressive frames.
Optics
The included lens has a 14x optical zoom, equivalent to 439 mm on a 35 mm film lens at its maximum telephoto range. The aperture can be set to auto or manual, and has a range of f/1.9 to f/16. The lens is compatible with 77 mm lens filters, including UV, polarizing, and neutral density filters.
General Operating
The PMW-EX3 weighs 7 pounds 9 ounces when equipped with the lens, battery, and memory card. The camcorder records to SxS Pro flash memory cards, so there are no moving parts that can break during recording. In addition to the BP-U30 battery, which gives 100 minutes of operating time, the camcorder has a 12V DC input.
Audio
The unit comes with a condenser microphone that mounts onto the camcorder. It can record audio in linear PCM mode, with up to two channels of audio sampled at 16 bits and 48 kHz, better than CD quality.
