Laptops have come a long way in the past decade, with brands like Sony, Dell and Toshiba pushing the limits of each successive generation. Samsung is one of the leaders in HDTV technology, offering crystal clear displays on their LCD models, which are surging in popularity. Anyone wishing to combine these two pieces of stellar technology--Toshiba laptops and Samsung LCD televisions--is in luck, because hooking up your laptop to a TV for use as an extended or external monitor is an easy task.

Hooking up the Laptop
1. Locate either the S-Video output port or the HDMI output port on your Toshiba laptop. Though the exact location is dependent on your model, the ports can generally be found on the side of the keyboard and should be clearly labeled. Consult your Toshiba owner's manual if you are still unsure of the locations.
2. Plug in one end of the cord you are using--HDMI to HDMI port or S-Video to S-Video port--to your Toshiba laptop. HDMI is widely considered the better option, as it is capable of transmitting high-definition images and sound to your television. The only drawback is its expense, with many cords easily breaking the $30 mark. S-Video is far less expensive, but also offers substandard video quality and doesn't transmit audio.
3. Locate the HDMI or S-Video input port on your Samsung LCD TV. On almost all models, both can be found on the back and are clearly labeled.
4. Plug in the other end of the cable you are using into the appropriate port--HDMI or S-Video--on the back of your TV.
5. Set the television to the proper video channel using the "Source" option on your remote control. This is the default button on most Samsung models. However, if you're using a universal remote, it might be labeled "Input."
Select whichever video input you are using, HDMI or S-Video.
6. On your laptop, right click your desktop background, highlight "Graphics Options" and a menu appears.
7. Highlight, then left click "Output To: TV" on the menu. Your laptop's monitor should then go black and your desktop should be displayed on your TV.
