Troubleshoot A Powerbook G4 Hard Disk Failure

Laptops have become more useful than ever now that the keys are almost as large as those used with desktops.


The PowerBook G4 may be outdated, but it is still a dependable laptop that many Mac owners continue to use. If the Power Book refuses to start or functions erratically, the PowerBook's hard disk drive is the most likely culprit. Troubleshooting the hard drive can tell you if it needs repair, and if the repair is one that you can do yourself. Troubleshoot the hard disk drive by making sure that power is properly flowing to it. You can also use a built-in disk repair program, as well as one you can get from a Mac software supply store. The PowerBook G4 will not be harmed by your troubleshooting the hard drive.

Insert the operating disc from a hard disk drive repair program (such as Drive Genius 2) into the optical disc drive slot of the PowerBook G4. Wait for the icon of the hard disk drive repair program's operating disc to appear on the desktop. Hold down the power button and select "Restart" from the dialog window that appears. Hold down the "C" key on the keyboard until you hear the repair program's operating disc start up. When the program's icon comes up on the screen, double-click to launch it.


Select the PowerBook G4's hard disk drive from the list presented at the left of the repair program's main screen. Select "Repair" from the drop down menu under the "Function" tab at the right of the repair program's main screen. Press the "Start" button and wait as the program troubleshoots and repairs the PowerBook G4's hard disk drive. Quit the hard disk drive repair program when it has finished and reboot the PowerBook G4. Hold down the mouse button to eject the repair program's operating disc from the PowerBook G4. The PowerBook G4 will now continue to boot up using the hard disk drive.
