Installing new pipes on your Harley Sportster can be done at home with just a few tools.
Installing new exhaust pipes on your Harley-Davidson Sportster may seem like a daunting task if you're a new owner who has never performed any type of modification before. Any authorized Harley-Davidson repair shop will be able to properly make the installation for you, but you could save money by installing the new exhaust pipes yourself. Installing new exhaust pipes is actually a fairly simple task requiring just a few hand tools.
Instructions
1. Remove the old exhaust pipe. Detach the old pipe from the exhaust crossover tube and slide the pipe off of the header pipe. It may be necessary to lightly tap the pipe with a rubber hammer to loosen it if it has been there for some time.
2. Attach any brackets that may have come with your new pipes. Install a new gasket into the exhaust pipe and slide the new pipe onto the header pipe. Work the new pipe until it fits securely and all the bolt holes are aligned. Use the bolts supplied with your new exhaust pipe to attach the new pipe to the mounting brackets.
3. Attach the new pipe clamp in place and tighten it with the supplied nut and bolt. Repeat the procedure for the other exhaust pipe.
