Colleges Near Tahoe California

Lake Tahoe is the name of the lake and its surrounding areas.


Lake Tahoe is a large lake that is situated directly on part of the border between eastern California and western Nevada. It's the largest freshwater lake in the mountain region of Sierra Nevada, and a thriving community has developed on its banks. This community is also known as Lake Tahoe, or Tahoe, for short, and it offers all the amenities of a large mountain town, including several institutes of higher learning.


Lake Tahoe Community College


Lake Tahoe Community College is a two-year college that maximizes the advantage of its natural scenic surroundings. It is situated at a point above sea level higher than any other college in the country, and the campus overlooks the surrounding mountains and forest. The college offers three dozen associate degree programs as well as 20 professional certificates, and classes can be taken either on its majestic campus, or via cutting-edge online curriculum. There are also degree options for students who intend to transfer to four-year institutions upon graduation. LTCC has a fairly large campus, amply accommodating over 4,000 students each semester.

Sierra Nevada College


Less traditional in scope and approach is Sierra Nevada College, also located in Tahoe. Sierra Nevada College is a progressive four-year college that offers its students more than 30 majors, concentrations and minors; beyond that, the school is committed to a holistic academic culture providing a rigorous liberal arts education to its students. A main approach consists of a core battery of well-rounded and diverse liberal arts courses that all students, regardless of their majors or concentrations, are required to take.

University of Nevada, Reno


Just across Lake Tahoe and across the state border is the University of Nevada, Reno, a sprawling state school located in the downtown district of the city. With more than 100 undergraduate and graduate majors, minors and concentrations and eight separate colleges, UNR is one of the largest university systems in the region. Two of its colleges, the Reynolds School of Journalism and the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources, offer students unique opportunities in hands-on specialization in their chosen fields. Reno is accessible to Tahoe from two different highways and numerous smaller roads, and many students easily commute.
