Tourist Attractions Of The Central Plains In Texas

There are opportunities to fish in Texas

The Central Plains of Texas are elevated, flat areas, bordered by Oklahoma and the Red River to the north and the Llano Estacado to the west. Unsurprisingly, the main draw of the area is the outdoor attractions and activities, as the region is largely rural. To see as much as possible you will need a car, as distances between towns, national parks and regions can be lengthy. If you're flying, the nearest airport is the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Scenery

The land around the Central Plains area is used for farming or ranches, most of which is pasture or oak forest, therefore expect to see plenty of cows grazing and, to a lesser extent, sheep and goats. The majority of the rivers and lakes you will come across are artificial, and were created to cope with the periods of drought that often occur in the summer. Wildlife such as wild turkeys, deer and quail inhabit the forests, which are hunting grounds.

Towns

The towns of Graham, Vernon and Quanah are of great historical interest, particularly for those who are studying or have an interest in the American Civil War. Graham has the largest historical square of any city in the U.S., as well as numerous antique shops. Vernon has a museum dedicated to Jack Teagarden, a famous jazz musician who was born there. Quanah is named after the last chief of the Comanches, Quanah Parker. The town has various monuments and museums dedicated to Texas Rangers; the Hardeman County Museum is a former jail where the original cells can be visited.

National Parks

Between Fredericksburg and Johnson City, you will find the Lyndon B. Johnson State Historical Park, which contains 717.9 acres of flora and fauna. Visitors to this park will be able to see buffaloes, white-tailed deer and bison. The park is historically significant as it has seen Native American, Spanish and German populations come and go. The Lake Meredith National Recreation Area has a large artificial reservoir that is used for fishing, boating and swimming. The park itself has a camping area and is a popular spot for hunting.

Cowboy Holidays

While traveling through Texas, you might come across one of the various ranches that offer accommodation and the opportunity to be a cowboy or cowgirl for a few days. As well as fishing, hunting and barbecues, there are rodeo competitions, horse riding, hearty chuckwagon breakfasts and trail rides.
