Change The Primary Oil In A 1989 Harley Davidson Electric Glide Classic

Harley-Davidson Electra Glide models utilize a wet clutch system contained within the primary chaincase.

Harley-Davidson Electra Glide models utilize a wet clutch system contained within the primary chaincase. This chaincase contains the clutch, compensating sprocket and approximately 32 oz. of primary fluid. Access to the internal workings of the chaincase may be accomplished through the clutch inspection cover. The length of time to complete this task will vary upon skill level, but should take no longer than 30 minutes.

Instructions

1. Place a suitable drain pan under the Electra Glide primary. Remove the magnetic drain plug at the bottom of the primary chaincase cover with a T40 Torx drive. Allow all of the used primary fluid to drain. Clean the drain plug with a shop rag. Re-install the plug into its hole.

2. Remove the five Allen-head screws securing the clutch inspection cover with an Allen wrench. Drop the cover and its gasket. Use caution to avoid scratching the outside of the cover.

3. Stand the motorcycle upright. Add HD Primary Chaincase Lubricant through the clutch inspection cover to the level of the diaphragm spring. Clean all lubricant from around the outside of the primary cover in the area of the clutch. Reinstall the clutch inspection cover with a new gasket. Tighten the Allen screws in a crosswise pattern to help the cover to seat properly. Dispose of the used fluid properly.
