Change The Battery Cover On A Harley Davidson

Harley Davidson offers a vast range of aftermarket parts to insure that no two bikes are the same. Nearly every component of a Harley Davidson motorcycle can be changed or replaced with a custom part, some dripping in chrome, others wearing black-on-black, to fit the owner's personality. The battery cover, a piece that is often neglected, can also be changed to add that final touch to any custom bike.

Instructions

Sportster (XL) Models

1. Remove the original battery cover by grasping the cover at its upper corners and pulling away gently to release it from the frame's mounting clips. Then, lift the cover upward slightly to remove the mounting grommet from the battery

tray's tab.

2. Wipe away any dirt or buildup on the frame and battery tray.

3. Install the new battery cover by sliding the new side cover's grommet onto the mounting tab on the battery tray, using a slight downward motion. Align the top of the battery cover's mounting clips to the frame, starting with the front clip. Gently press the battery cover into the clips.

4. Wipe away any fingerprints or smudges from the battery cover.

Dyna Models

5. Remove the seat and disconnect the battery, starting with the negative terminal.

6. Pull the battery out of the tray and loosen the mounting bolts that secure the lower tray to the frame. Remove the original top and side covers from the battery tray and discard or store for later use.

7. Install the new cover by lining up the mounting clips on the bottom of the cover with the retaining lip on the lower battery tray. Press the clips onto the lip until they are seated completely. If mounted correctly, the top of the new cover will fit securely and evenly under the frame.

8. Open the new cover, tighten the battery tray mounting screws and install the battery. Connect the positive terminal first, followed by the negative terminal.

9. Replace the seat.
