Call me the Rainmaker, Condensation on HVAC Ducts
Help, Its raining in my basement and there is a drought outside. I'm having a problem with condensation collecting on the outside of the HVAC ducts in my basement. Most of the condensation seems to be concentrated in the first 5 feet of the duct after it leaves the blower unit. I have checked the condensate drains and they are working fine. Would insulation or perhaps a dehumidifier help? Any help on what causes this phenomen would greatly be apprecitated. Thanks! I'm no expert on basement installations, since here in Florida they are few and far between. Perhaps someone else in this forum can be of more help but some things are a given. Your duct work should be insulated of course. If it is then maybe its U-value went south due to past moisture problems. If so, re-insulate. You also could be getting TOO cold an air temp out of youre unit which can result from closing off some dampers or registers resulting in not enough airflow across the evap coil. Your filter could be plugged up. The coil and/or the blower could be plugged with gook, reducing air flow. Also, the humidity in the basement could be too high and you need a dehumidifier. Hope this helps.
