Set Up A Directv Hd Dvr

So you want to set up your DIRECTV HD DVR. Assuming that you already have a dish set up at your house, this is a very easy process. You will need to check the back of your television before you get started to determine if you have a HDMI port. These are very narrow and rectangular, and usually labeled HDMI. If not, you will need to locate a component video port, which is three small round ports that are color-coded red, green and blue. If you do not have either, your television does not support HD. Through these next couple of steps, you will learn set up a DIRECTV HD DVR.

Instructions

1. Locate the two lines coming from the satellite dish. Then, on the back of the HD DVR, you will see two screws labeled "In From Satellite" or something along those lines--they will be labeled identically. Screw these plugs onto those screws.

2. For televisions with HDMI ports, plug your HDMI wire into the back of the satellite box, then insert it into the back of your television. Tune your television to the appropriate mode to watch through the HDMI port. Sometimes, the label for the correct mode will be on the back of the TV near the port, such as Video 5. If not, check your TV's documentation.

3. For televisions without HDMI ports, using your component video cord, plug the ends into the appropriately colored ports on the back of the satellite box (red, green and blue), then onto the back of the television. Follow suit with the RCA audio wires (red and white). Make sure that the audio port you use on the television matches with the video port you used; these are usually grouped together. Tune your television to the appropriate mode to watch through the appropriate video port. Sometimes, the label for the correct mode will be on the back of the TV near the port, such as Video 5. If not, check your TV's documentation.

4. Plug in your HD DVR, and turn it on (if it doesn't turn on on it's own). Follow the on-screen setup--DirecTV makes this really easy to follow.

5. You should be able to watch television as soon as the on-screen setup is completed, but it could take up to eight hours for the DVR to download all the information you need to record.
