Install An Oil Filter Kit On A Harleydavidson Shovelhead

An oil filter kit for the Harley-Davidson Shoverlhead motorcycle consists of an oil filter and a rubber gasket, or O-ring. The oil filter strains debris, such as heavy metals, from the oil. The rubber gasket creates a seal on the filter so oil doesn't leak out from the engine. Installing the oil filter kit on the Shovelhead requires about 20 to 30 minutes of labor and only a few common tools.

Instructions

1. Park the Shovelhead in a bike stand to keep it upright while completing this maintenance.

2. Remove the engine casing with a Phillips-head screwdriver and set it aside for safekeeping.

3. Remove the old oil filter by turning it counterclockwise. The oil filter is located on the transmission, which is on the side of the engine. Reach your fingers into the port and pull out the O-ring used previously.

4. Lubricate the new O-ring with a thin layer of transmission oil that is used on the motorcycle. Place the O-ring on the open end of the new oil filter. Slide the oil filter and gasket into the port. Twist it clockwise a half turn to secure it on the engine. Do not turn more than half a turn or it will be too tight to get off later. The seal tightens as the engine runs.

5. Replace the engine casing.
