Northwest Florida offers a range of colleges.
Northwest Florida consists of 16 counties near the Alabama and Georgia borders. The area includes the Florida Panhandle, beaches and Tallahassee, the state capital. It also has a range of colleges in the region from a nationally-known athletic powerhouse to state schools and community colleges.
Chipola College
Chipola College began in 1946 as a private school called Chipola Junior College. A year later, it became a public school. In August 2003, the school started awarding four-year degrees in math and science, and changed its name to Chipola College. The school remains one of the state's 28 community colleges. The school of over 5,000 students awards a range of Bachelor degrees, Associate in arts, Associate in science and Associate in applied science degrees. Chipola has six intercollegiate athletic teams that play in the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Florida State University
College football fans are familiar with the successful Florida State University (FSU) team coached by Bobby Bowden from 1976 to 2009. The Seminoles' 17 intercollegiate teams compete in the powerful Atlantic Coast Conference. Academically, the school of nearly 40,000 students--75 percent are undergraduates--have a variety of subjects to choose from broken into 15 colleges. Florida State awards advanced Master's/specialist degrees in 19 programs, Doctorates in 67 programs, Baccalaureate degrees in 88 programs and Master's degrees in 102 programs, according to the school. Students can also attend FSU's law school to get a J.D. and medical school to earn a M.D.

University of West Florida
The University of West Florida became the sixth of the eventual 11 schools in the State University System of Florida after the state legislature authorized it in 1955. The university enrolled its first class in 1967. In the spring of 2010, West Florida enrolled 11,200 students--8,900 undergraduates and 1,200 grad students. It offers nine Bachelor degrees, 11 Master's degrees, an Associate degree, a Doctoral degree and a specialist degree. Students take classes in the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business or the College of Professional Studies. West Florida has 13 athletic teams that play in the NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference.
