Relaxing around the pool or your yard just isn't the same without a chaise lounge. A chaise lounge is long enough to stretch out on and features an adjustable back that lets you change the position from a straight-backed chair to a flat bed. The chairs are typically made with flat slats, which can be uncomfortable. Adding a cushion to the chair provides comfortable padding.
Instructions
1. Measure the length and width of the chaise lounge chair with the tape measure. Add one inch to the length and one inch to the width to compensate for the seams. Decide how thick you want the cushion and add that to your measurements. For example, if you want a cushion thickness of three inches, add three additional inches to both the length and the width.
2. Cut the fabric to the measurements you obtained. Cut a second piece of fabric to the same size; this gives you a top and bottom for the cushion. Flip the fabric over so that the patterned or brighter sides of the fabric face the inside. Attach the pieces of fabric to each other with a row of pins; this holds the fabric together during sewing.
3. Thread the needle. Stitch along one of the long sides of the fabric, moving from one corner to the other and attaching the two pieces of fabric together. Knot the end of the thread and trim, then re-thread the needle. Stitch along one of the short sides and keep working your way around the fabric. Leave a five-inch opening on each end of the cushion.
4. Turn the cushion cover right side out so that the patterned side of the fabric is now on the outside. Turn the iron to the lowest setting and gently run it across the fabric, smoothing out any wrinkles. Check the seams carefully for any gaps or loose stitches. If more stitches are needed, turn the cushion cover inside out again and add more stitches.
5. Fill the cushion with cotton batting, pushing the batting through one of the five-inch openings. Keep adding more batting and pushing it inside the cushion. Pull the batting down the cushion by putting your hand through the five-inch opening at the opposite end. Smooth out any lumps. Return to the open ends of the cushion and stitch along the openings. Keep these stitches small so they won't be noticeable.
6. Lay the cushion flat on the chaise lounge and then adjust the back of the chair so that it sits upright. Fold the cushion to fit the chair. At the fold in the cushion, sew a series of small stitches the entire width of the cushion, pushing the needle all the way through the batting. When finished, tie a small knot in the thread and trim the excess thread. This extra seam lets the cushion move with the chair.
Tips Warnings
Choose durable fabric that won't fade or discolor in the sunlight.
Adding a zipper to one end of the cushion lets you quickly replace any stuffing or swap out the batting when it gets wet.
