Dogs need room to run and play; even if they aren't outside dogs their owners should provide them with a kennel and a run. Luckily, designing an indoor kennel and run is not very difficult. The main problem one would have is space. If you have a basement that is not in use it would be ideal for this project.
Instructions
1. Measure a space about 5 feet from the wall, and mark it. The easiest way to make an unobtrusive dog kennel and run is to have it run along the wall. If you have enough space make it two walls, including a corner.
2. Install borders from one end of your proposed kennel area to the other. The exact procedure will depend on what border material you chose. This may require attaching brackets to the floor to hold the border firmly so that you don't have a wobbly kennel. The height is dependent on you and your dog. If you don't have a jumper or if you can build the kennel high enough, then you won't have to put a cover on the kennel.
3. Leave an opening at one end of the kennel for a gate so that you can get in to clean the kennel and to let the dog in and out.
4. Fashion a door or gate out of the same material as the border by installing hinges on one side, and a latch on the other. Affix the gate and mount the latch joiner on the wall or opposite border.
5. Place the dog crate with bedding in one corner of the kennel area and set up the food and water close by. Designate the farthest area as a bathroom by placing newspaper there for the dog to use.
Tips Warnings
A concrete basement floor with a drain is ideal for a kennel and run area.
Don't build a high border with a material that doesn't allow you to see the dog or the dog to see out. Even in a cushy kennel set-up with room to run, your dog will need to interact with people.
