Delta 10 table saw motor bad
I have a 2 yr old Delta 10 table saw that cost about $340 and the motor is bad. The list price for new motor including shipping is just over $200. Is their anyplace that sells such things for less than list? I took it to a repair shop and they said they could repair the motor for about $200, by replacing the primary part. Anyplace that offers good rebuilt or new motors at a more reasonable price? Hi Kampeh, A Delta product with a 2 yr old motor should not go bad. Modern motors have voltage and heat protectors build in. They can go bad, but it is usual. What happened to your motor? I assume its not brushes, which is a $5 repair yourself? What is the 'primary part' the repair shop will replace/fix? Here is what I have learned about motor and motor repair. I learned it cause, like you, I wanted a low cost repair. Shops do not repair 110 volt, single phase motors. In rare cases if it is a 5 hp special motor they might, but usually you will find they only work on 3 phase motors due to the labor cost of repair verses replacement cost. So you found a shop to repair it, but it would not be as reliable as a new motor, will it. Am I right! I can tell you that the only thing that cost $200 to repair is the cost of rewinding the armature. So you must have a shorted out motor winding. This is common from overheating. Since it is a Delta motor, with has a overheating protector, you must have overloaded the motor many times until the cumulative effect eventually damaged the motor. This is how motors with protectors get burnt out. I know of no business that markets rebuilt 110 volt motors. However, there are surplus stores and discount stores , swap and shops and best of all, garage sales! None of these are convienient options when you need a motor 'now'. That bring us to a catalog store, also a web site, http://www.harborfreight.com. They carry the lowest priced new motors I have ever seen. But you get what you pay for. I use there prices as a guide for shopping for the exact motor I want elsewhere. I have never bought a motor from them. These low priced motors tend have no protective circuits and poor bearings. You need to read up on motor features before you shop. Two motors with the same HP rating could be vastly different in price due to features like, overheat protection, capacitor start, multi speed, reversible, rated for wet or explosive applications, amp draw, etc, sealed bearings, cooling fins verses external air circulation, and so on. These are just a few items off the top of my head! Never buy a motor without the overload protector feature because it is trash the first time you overload it. If you are like me, you will end up spending $200 for a new good motor and start picking up used interesting motors as bargains when you see them, and saving them for later. lol. Hope this helps, good luck, Mark You're most likely looking for a 1 1/2HP, NEMA 56 frame, 3450 RPM 115/230 capacitor start, open dripproof motor with auto or manual thermal protection. W.W. Graingers has them, PN 6K365, for 192.00 You can also try Northern Tool for PN 161755-B948 with manual thermal protection for 179.99 IMO, if you buy a cheap motor you'll get what you pay for... I have a Delta contractor saw in my woodshop and have beat the heck out of it over the last 12 years and it's performed flawlessly...But, I've never overloaded it. The saw I have ran around 550.00 12 years ago...maybe they use a different motor on the less expensive model... Sorry I couldn't be of more help... Pat I see this is a very old post but, These saws have crappy motors made in China/Taiwan. I would never buy a saw with the arbor/motor as a combination. Put any kind of load on them and the armature burns up. It's crap, you can get the complete motor from Delta for $175 but they want $223 for just the armature, makes no sense . Delta should be ashamed of themselves for selling this garbage. My 30 year old Delta still works, unlike this junk.
