Colleges In Western Florida

The Florida panhandle is home to several colleges.


The western region of Florida, commonly called the Panhandle, is an area known for it's white sand beaches and vacation hot spots. But it is also full of educational opportunities. Among the colleges in Western Florida are community college campuses and one the state's largest universities. Regardless of your educational plans, there are plenty of options available in the area.


University of West Florida


Located in Pensacola, the University of West Florida has offered courses on its main campus since 1965. The Pensacola campus is a 1,600-acre property with extension campuses located in Fort Walton Beach, Elgin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field. The main campus is located on a nature preserve and bird sanctuary located along the Escambia River.


The university is made up of the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and the College of Professional Studies. Students can enroll in programs that lead to an associate degree, bachelor's degree or master's degree. There is also a doctoral program in education.


Florida State University


Florida State University is one of the leading research universities in the state of Florida. The campus is located in the state capital of Tallahassee and offers undergraduate and graduate programs in a wide variety of subjects. Many majors, including chemistry, physics, psychology, creative writing, business and law have been ranked among the nation's top 25 programs. The FSU dance, film, music and theater programs are considered world class.


In addition to their high academic standing, the university is also the home to major sports programs including a football program that has won two national titles and has produced multiple Heisman Trophy winners. The athletic teams compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference.


Florida A&M University


Florida A&M University is a historically black university located in Tallahassee near the Florida State campus that strives to meet the needs of African-American and other minority students while offering equal opportunity to students of all races and ethnicities. Students attending the college can choose to study a wide range of subject matter ranging from health science, nursing, engineering, liberal arts, architecture, business, journalism and education.


Gulf Coast Community College


Gulf Coast Community College is a network of college campuses based in Panama City that started in 1957. Although the main campus is located in the panhandle, the network has expanded to 28 satellite campuses located within commuting distance of more than 90 percent of the population of Florida.


Students at GCCC can choose between degree programs in business, culinary management, education, health science, literature, math, performing arts, social sciences, public safety, technology and athletics.
