Troubleshoot The Microsoft Lifecam Hd5000

Microsoft released the LifeCam HD-5000 webcam in September 2010. Cameras like this might not have worked even a few years ago, but the age of high-speed Internet allows for high-definition, real-time video. The HD-5000 gets its name from its high-definition resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels, or 720p. But HD or not, webcams break down from time to time; troubleshooting a webcam doesn't change if it's HD or regular definition.

Instructions

1. Check the USB connection. Like all external webcams, the Microsoft LifeCam HD-5000 connects to your computer via a USB cable. When this cable comes unplugged -- accidentally or deliberately -- the camera cannot power on or communicate with your computer. Unplug the cable and plug it back in to re-seat the webcam.

2. Try another USB port. Unplug the HD-5000 from its current port and connect it to another USB slot on your computer. Unplug another device if you need to. Alternatively, if you've moved the camera from its original USB port -- to make room for another device -- plug it back in to the first port. Some devices are assigned to a specific USB hub and the driver won't find the camera on an alternative port.

3. Reinstall the Microsoft LifeCam software. The software contains the LifeCam driver, which your computer needs to power the camera. Unplug the camera before proceeding, and then click "Start" and "Control Panel." Select "Uninstall a program" and scroll through the list until you see "LifeCam."

4. Reboot the computer with the camera unplugged after uninstalling the software. When your computer boots back to the Windows desktop, insert the CD-Rom disc that came with the LifeCam and install the software and driver again. Do not plug in the camera until prompted by the software. If you didn't follow this process the first time you installed the LifeCam, Microsoft cannot guarantee that it will work correctly.
