There are many other tourist attractions in Wisconsin besides Wisconsin Dells.
The Midwest is known for its many charms and nowhere is this more evident than Wisconsin. Its geography is a mixture of low lying plains, massive coniferous forests, sandstone formations and glacial lakes. As such, this is one of the best places to enjoy nature anywhere in the country. Coupled with a well-balanced and fairly predictable climate, this makes the state a great place to visit for outdoor enthusiasts.
Historical Sites
Wisconsin's historical sites are well-preserved and available for public tours that chronicle the state's past. Fairlawn Mansion provides a glimpse into the state's industrial heritage and houses a museum. The development of the state can be much appreciated after visiting the First Capitol Historic Site in Belmont. A site of national importance is the Little White Schoolhouse in Ripon, the birthplace of the Republican Party.
Festivities and Celebrations
Visiting the state's food and wine festivals is a great way to taste the culture quite literally. Much appetite is required if you are to drop by the Festival of Flavors in Eagle River where the best of Northwoods Wisconsin can be expected. Live music and food joins wine-tasting at the Wet Whistle Wine Fest in Algoma. Jazz on the Vine, in Elkhart Lake, combines soul music and food from the Osthoff culinary team. A more exclusive event is the Food, Wine and Cider Festival in Stockholm.
Tours
Part of Wisconsin's rich history was how Prohibition gangsters, such as Al Capone and John Dillinger, used to hide out in the state's wooded areas. 'Gangster tours' take you to some of the state's most notorious locales associated with Prohibition. Tours that lead to lighthouses along the Great Lakes are also available. Another tour to join is the Apostle Islands Cruise Service, which allows you to see the Apostle Islands up close and personal. Daily tours of the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee are available.
The Great Outdoors
Among the best outdoor locations to visit is the Great Wisconsin Birding and Nature Trail. This is a place for bird and nature watching and among the first of such areas in the state. Rock and sandstone formations await the weary traveler at the Apostle Island National Lakeshore. A drive along the Great River Road National Scenic Byway is a relaxing and comforting one. It is also an ideal destination for bikers, anglers, campers and birdwatchers. A series of waterfalls and forests along the North Country National Scenic Trail can also be explored.
