Painting wheels black can be done at home with time and patience.
Painting your mag wheels is an effective way to customize the look of your vehicle. The term "mag wheels" originally described magnesium wheels but is now a generic that refers generally to aftermarket wheels. Painting your wheels a matching body color has been a traditional option, but black has become a popular choice for today's enthusiasts. Thanks to the introduction of automotive spray paints designed specifically for wheels, it is easy to paint your wheels glossy, metallic or flat black. Proper preparation is time-consuming, but the actual process is simple and requires no special tools.
Instructions
1. Remove the wheels from your car and wash thoroughly with mild soap and water. All road grime, wax and tire dressing must be removed from the wheel.
2. Sand down the current finish on your wheels with sandpaper. The gloss and shine must be removed to give the new paint an adequate bonding surface. Start with a heavier grit like 320 and then finish with 1200 grit sandpaper. Wash your wheels again with mild soap to remove all sanding dust.
3. Mask the tire around the wheel with painter's tape. You can place index cards or thin cardboard between the edge of the wheel and the tire while you are painting. Spray one or two light coats of primer and let dry.
4. Shake a can of wheel paint thoroughly. Apply several light coats of black paint to the wheels, using an even, back-and-forth motion. Thin coats will prevent the paint from running and provide more uniform coverage. Shake the can thoroughly between each coat, and follow the drying instructions for your particular paint product. If you want a glossy appearance, spray a clear coat once you've finished laying down the color.
5. Allow the paint to cure for at least one hour before remounting your wheels.
