Online Motorcycle Mechanic Training

Students learn about different components of motorcycles in online training programs.

People who love to ride and fix motorcycles sometimes pursue careers as motorcycle mechanics. Online motorcycle mechanic training programs are available for students with busy schedules who need the flexibility to take classes during any time or day of the week. Online motorcycle mechanic training offers students all the advantages of learning at home by providing the same study materials, examinations and school resources as a traditional classroom.

Types

Online motorcycle mechanic training programs are offered through career colleges, vocational schools and education institutes. Some online programs focus specifically on training in motorcycle engine, diesel engine or automotive systems. Online motorcycle mechanic training courses also differ in program structure. Whereas some courses are separated into instruction sets or categories, other schools assign students courses in a traditional lesson and practice-exercise format. Some online schools also provide Internet resources such as online libraries and librarians who can assist students with questions and research-related topics.

Curriculum

Online motorcycle mechanic training programs include instruction on repair and replacement methods for headlights, signal lights, points, spark plugs, wheels and tires. Students also receive an overview on the history of the motorcycle industry, two- and four-stroke engines, transmissions, frame and suspension, cooling systems, fuel systems and electrical systems. Typical courses include shop safety and tools, internal combustion engine theory, drive train and starting systems, electrical theory, brake systems, charging systems and starting motors. Some online schools also offer students the option to concentrate in areas such as Asian motorcycle technology, European Ducati and Triumph motorcycles, or Harley Davidson motorcycles.

Financial Aid

Online motorcycle mechanic training offers the flexibility of Internet learning and tuition costs that are on a par with offline schools. Financial aid options are available to students able to demonstrate financial need. For example, some schools offer interest-free financing and monthly payment plans. Others support military education benefit programs and tuition reimbursement from employers. Some programs provide financial counseling services and help students put together packages that incorporate federal work study programs, Stafford Loans, PLUS loans, Perkins loans and Pell Grants.

Potential

After completing an online motorcycle mechanic training program, there are a range of careers students can pursue. Graduates pursue jobs as line technicians, service writers, parts managers and warranty clerks. Professionals work in dealerships selling motorcycle parts and vehicles while others join racing pit crews. Motorcycle companies also offer trained motorcycle mechanics jobs as parts representatives or as customer service specialists.

Motorcycle mechanics with formal training should expect excellent job prospects through 2018, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that employment for small engine mechanics will increase 7 percent. The BLS states that employers prefer to hire mechanics who have training on a variety of different engines and energy-efficient technology that meets government environmental standards and regulations. Also, trained motorcycle mechanics will be needed to replace workers retiring from the industry and transitioning into other occupations.
