The 2008 Heritage was part of the Harley-Davidson Softail range of custom cruisers, along with the Night Train, Rocker, Rocker C, Softail Deluxe, Softail Cross Bones, Softail Custom and Fat Boy. The 2008 Heritage model features a quick-release windshield, passenger backrest and retro 1940s leather saddlebags with buckles that could be detached from the bike quickly. The bike also features lots of chrome and the classic Harley-Davidson styling that the Heritage celebrates.
Engine
The 2008 Heritage has a four-stroke Twin Cam 96B engine of 1584 cubic centimeters or 96 cubic inches, from which the engine takes its name. The Twin Cam 96B has two cylinders in a V-twin configuration and two valves per cylinder. Overhead valve pushrods control the opening and closing of the valves. The bore and stroke of the engine is 3.75 inches by 4.3 inches. The compression ratio is 9.21:1. The bike runs on premium unleaded gasoline and has electric start. The engine is air-cooled and has electronic sequential port fuel injection. The 2008 Heritage produces a maximum torque of 86 ft.-lbs. at 3,200 rpm.
Transmission and Chassis
The 2008 Heritage uses both a chain and a belt final drive system with six manual gears. The bike's front suspension uses telescopic forks. The rear suspension has a twin-sided steel swingarm and dual hidden shocks, based on the look of an old hard-tail suspension, to give the Softail ride. The front brake is an 11.7-inch disc, with four caliper pistons; the rear brake is an 11.5-inch disc with two caliper pistons. Both the Heritage wheels are 16 inches in diameter and are made of chromed steel. The tires fitted are Dunlops: MT90B16 72H on the front and 150/80 R16 71H on the rear. The Heritage has full length foot-boards for rider convenience with a heel/toe shifter. Both the front and rear fender are made of steel with chrome accents, and the frame also is made of steel.
Dimensions
The Heritage is 94.5 inches in length, with a ground clearance of 5.1 inches and a trail of 5.8 inches. The wheelbase is 64.5 inches and the rake is 32 degrees. The fuel tank holds 5 gallons of fuel and the bike has a fuel economy of 35 mpg in the city and 54 mpg on the highway. Its dry weight is 725 lbs.
