Nisland, South Dakota is a town of 204 people (as of the 2000 census) and has no motels. There are accommodations in several nearby towns and cities, however, including Newell, Belle Fourche and Whitewood. Motel rooms in the area are hard to come by during the first week of August because of the nearby Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which attracts hundreds of thousands of attendees.
Newell Motels
Newell, South Dakota is 7 miles northeast of Nisland. With a population of 646, the town covers only 1 square mile, but it does have a single motel: Newell Hotel & Apartments on South Girard Avenue. This hotel is the closest accommodation to Nisland, located about 15 minutes away by car along US-212 and SD-79. To get to the hotel, turn right on 4th Street from SD-79 and take the 3rd left onto Girard Avenue.
Belle Fourche Motels
Belle Fourche is a city of about 4,500 people, located 15 miles west of Nisland on US-212. The town offers a wider array of motel options than Newell, including both independent motels and national chains. If you prefer a familiar name, Belle Fourche has a Super 8, a Motel 6 and an AmericInn Hotel & Suites. Locally-owned motels include Ace Motel, Kings Inn, Reid Motel and the Sunset Motel.
Whitewood Motels
Whitewood is another small town located 15 miles south of Nisland. It has a population of 844 people, but boasts two motels, both independently owned. Tony's Motel offers kitchenettes in some of the rooms, with either two queen-sized beds or one king-sized bed. Iron Horse Inn bills itself as a destination hotel on 14 acres in the Black Hills. It actively courts Sturgis Motorcycle Rally attendees and offers covered motorcycle parking.
Other Nearby Towns
For those willing to travel even further, there are several other towns with a selection of motels within 45 miles of Nisland, including Sturgis, Spearfish, Deadwood, Central City and Lead. Deadwood is a historical tourism destination in its own right, as it is the site of the graves of Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok. Spearfish was founded during the Black Hills gold rush and is the largest city in the area with a population of 8,600.
