A safety course reduces the risks of driving a motorcycle.
Since 2008, the State of Florida has required all new motorcycle riders to complete a certified education program using materials developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation prior to applying for licensure. Insurance companies may also offer discounts based on completion of introductory or advanced training classes. Three locations within Pinellas County, Florida are registered as sponsors of an eligible course.
Motorcycle Rider Education of Clearwater
Motorcycle Rider Education of Clearwater has three programs of instruction. The Basic Rider's Course covers the material required for a Florida motorcycle license, and lasts for 16 hours. Students participate in a four hour classroom lecture, and practice driving on the following Saturday and Sunday. Experienced riders who wish to learn new handling techniques or brush up on street driving skills using their own motorcycle can take the Experienced Rider Course which lasts four to six hours. The Basic Trike/Sidecar (STEP) Course is available for drivers who would like to learn operate a motorcycle with a sidecar attachment.

Suncoast Safety Council
The Suncoast Safety Council offers a 15 hour Basic Course for new riders satisfying the education requirements for a Florida motorcycle license. The classroom portion covers the handling characteristics of different motorcycles recommended clothing and gear, and driving strategies to avoid accidents. Students will then practice defensive driving on a closed course. Experienced drivers are eligible for an advanced course teaching specialized skills in lane placement, maneuvering, inspection and repair. The school offers gift certificates that can be applied towards tuition fees.

Jim's Harley-Davidson of St. Petersburg
Jim's Harley-Davidson of St. Petersburg offers the Rider's Edge course covering the basic motorcycle driving skills need to apply for a motorcycle license in Florida. The class is held over a four day period several times each month, and includes both classroom and range instruction. Police officers, firefighters, and both active and retired military personnel are eligible for discounts.
