The 1988 FLHTC Electra Glide Classic was built in commemoration of Harley-Davidson's 85th anniversary -- 1988 was the year Harley-Davidson narrowly avoided bankruptcy. Harley president Vaughn Beals rode a 1988 Classic motorcycle on a cross-country tour to celebrate the company's solvency.
Engine
The 1988 Electra Glide Classic featured an air-cooled, overhead valve, 45-degree V-twin four-stroke engine. The 1337 cc (81.59 cubic-inch), four-valve motor had a compression ratio of 8.5:1. It had an undersquare bore of 3.5 inches with a long stroke of 4.25 inches. The transverse-mounted motor was dry-sump lubricated.
Chassis
The 772-lb., belt-driven 1988 Electra Glide Classic had a steel double-cradle frame. It featured a cartridge-type front fork with a rear swingarm mono-shock.
