A sales tax is imposed on items purchased from retail establishments. According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, the state's sales tax rate is 4.225 percent as of October 2010. Counties and cities in Missouri can implement local sales and use taxes but these decisions are rare and must be approved by voters. There are a few steps to take to calculate sales tax after coupons in Missouri.
Instructions
1. Take the total sum of the purchase and subtract the coupon value from the total. For example if the sum is $101 and the coupon total is worth $1 off the price, your new final total after coupons is $100.
2. Multiply the final total by .04225, which is the decimal form of the Missouri sales tax rate of 4.225 percent. For example, if the final total is $100, multiplying it by .04225 gives you 4.22 --- you pay about $4.23 in sales tax.
3. To figure the final cost, add the final total to the amount of sales tax you're paying. For example, if the total bill is $100 and the tax you're paying is $4.225, then the total amount you owe is $104.23. Always round to the nearest hundredth of a decimal.
