Tools To Build Custom Choppers

There are several specialty tools used to build a custom chopper.

When building a custom chopper, use this list of tools to make the job easier and assure your chopper features that one-of-a-kind look. Customizing a chopper often is expensive because there are so many tools to buy, but some places rent them. Check with home improvement stores, local rental stores or specialty garages. Whether you rent or buy, getting the best tools pays off in the long run.

Tig Welder

For fusing pieces of aluminum together, a Tig welder--or tungsten inert gas welder--is one specialized tool needed. Tig welder prices start around $1,000, but it's an invaluable piece of equipment. The Tig lets you create lots of different joints, butts and corners to make your custom chopper unique.

Wheel Truing Stand

A wheel truing stand ensures your wheel turns correctly. You mount the tire in the truing stand and let it spin freely while you adjust the wheel spokes. This balances your wheel and ensures it turns perfectly. Wheel truing stands prices range from $99 to almost $500.

Handle Bar and Subframe Straightener

There will be times when you need to straighten a bend in your chopper frame or in the handle bars, and a straightener tool is what you need. This tool must be able to withstand a lot of pressure, so buy the best quality one you can afford. Prices range from $50 to $75.

Grinding and Cutting Tools

Grinding and cutting tools for building a custom chopper include bands and belts, finishing wheels and cutting bits, to name a few. Prices on these range from a few dollars to $100 or more. They are excellent tools for surface finishing, sanding, polishing and making custom cuts to achieve that custom chopper appearance.
