Change a PS3 From HDMI Cables to Non-HDMI Cables
With the increasing market for high-definition TVs, HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) cables have become mainstream. These are high-quality HD cables that support both audio and video in one single connection. HDMI cables do not come with a PlayStation 3 and must be purchased separately. On top of that, many TVs-especially older sets-do not support HDMI. If you still want to be able to play your PS3 on your TV without an HDMI cable, there are a few options. Be aware that none of the options offer the same level of HD quality.
Instructions
1. Remove the HDMI cable from the back of the PS3 and the TV.
2. Plug in a component AV cable into the back of the PS3. The port will be labeled "AV Multi Out." You will have five RCA plugs at the other end that need to go into the TV. The green, blue and red colored video plugs refer to the "Component Video Out" inputs on your TV. These tree will also be named "Y," "Pb/Cb," and "Pr/Cr." The last two plugs will go into the left and right (labeled "L" and "R") audio inputs located near the "Composite Video Out" port. Note that while this is still an HD signal, it is not as high-quality as the HDMI cable.
3. For the PS3 S-Video cable, plug one end into the back of the PS3 port labeled "AV Multi Out." The red and white plugs go into the audio inputs (labeled "L" and "R") in back of the TV. The flat, yellow connector is the S-Video. There should be a port labeled "S-Video" on the back of your TV. Be aware that this is not an HD connection.
4. If you do not have component or S-Video, your last option is to use a composite connection. While this isn't an HD connection, it should work with almost any TV. Plug one end into the PS3 port labeled "AV Multi Out." The three colored plugs--red, white, and yellow--go into the TV. Yellow is for the video input, while the red and white are for audio.
5. On the TV, change the video input. If you have multiple video inputs, it will correspond to the number on the back of your TV. So if the composite plugs are in the "Video 1" inputs in the back of the TV, you will need to set the TV to "Video 1." If you used a component cable or S-Video, the TV will need to be set accordingly.
6. Hold the "Power" button on the PS3 upon startup for five to 10 seconds. This will reset the video settings and is necessary if you previously had the PS3 set to an HDMI connection. The PS3 menu will automatically come up and ask you if you want to adjust your settings. Go through the menu, customize your video settings and then save.
