Remove A Harley Davidson Road King Starter

Many Harley Davidson Road King owners love to tinker with their motorcycles in the garage. And because motorcycle maintenance and repair can be very costly over time, this includes learning do their own repairs. If you're a Road King owner and need to remove your starter, the repair is relatively straightforward to do with a few common tools. The more repairs you do yourself, the more comfortable you will feel taking on larger jobs, if the need arises.


Instructions


1. Remove the passenger seat by detaching the mounting bracket from the top of the rear fender. Unscrew the Phillips screw. Lift up on the back of the seat. Slide the seat toward the back of the motorcycle to detach from the front seat mounting bracket.


2. Remove the driver seat by removing the two nuts from the studs using a 5/8-inch hex. This will free the mounting seat bracket from the rear fender.


3. Push the front seat rearward to free the tongue from the slot in the frame back.


4. Remove the starter front mounting screw and lock washer from the right side of the motorcycle. Remove the starter rear mounting screw and washer.


5. Remove the washer nut from the stud of the bracket tab. Remove the exhaust support bracket.


6. Pull back the rubber boot and remove the hex nut from the battery post. Remove the positive battery cable and the main power cable ring terminals.


7. Remove the starter solenoid at the front of the starter.


8. Find the oil filler cap and dipstick located on the right side of the motorcycle at the top of the transmission case. Rotate the cap counterclockwise to remove it. Cover the fill spout with a clean shop cloth the keep out dirt and debris.


9. Remove the starter from the motorcycle by carefully sliding it out through the space between the rear exhaust header pipe and the side cover. Be sure to avoid losing the two ring dowels installed in the primary chaincase flange.
