Install A Chevy Silverado Remote Starter

Chevy Silverado

A remote starter allows a vehicle's owner to start the vehicle from a remote location, such as a house or office. Remote starters provide a number of important benefits: they allow a vehicle to warm up before it is driven, which reduces engine wear, and they allow the vehicle's heater or air conditioner to establish a normal interior temperature before the driver enters. Remote starters are particularly useful in colder climates, where vehicle warm-up time is important. Remote starter kits can be purchased from a wide range of automotive parts suppliers, and this article will provide you with step-by-step instructions on install a remote starter in a Chevy Silverado.

Instructions

1. Coat the back of the remote starter body in rubber cement and mount the remote starter underneath the driver's side dashboard. Mount the remote starter as far to the left as you can, so that it will not be in the way of your legs when you are driving the Silverado.

2. Remove the grate on the driver's side heat vent by prying it off with the flathead screwdriver.

3. Thread the gray and yellow wires from the remote starter through the heat duct and into the Silverado's hood.

4. Open the Silverado's hood and pull the wires through. Locate the power wire running from the Silverado's battery to truck's engine compartment. Use the wire strippers to remove some of the rubber coating on the power wire.

5. Solder the ends of the gray wire to the stripper power wire using the soldering iron. Seal the soldered area with electrical tape.

6. Pull the yellow wire (the tachometer wire) from the remote starter kit around the Silverado's engine to the engine distributor. Locate the spark plug wires, which are attached to the engine distributor by a metal clamp. Strip some of the rubber coating off one of the spark plug wires, and solder the tachometer wire to the spark plug wire. Seal the attachment area with electrical tape.

7. Pull the red wire (the ignition wire) from the remote starter kit to the Silverado's steering column. On the left side of the steering column, you will find a large harness containing a gauge wire, which is the Silverado's ignition wire. Solder the end of the red wire to the Silverado's ignition wire.

8. Mount the remote starter antenna on the top of the driver's side dashboard with the rubber cement. Rout the antenna's wire under the dashboard and plug it into the remote starter.
