Motorcycle windshields protect riders from potential injury.
Motorcycle windshields protect you from flying debris while you are driving. If your Honda motorcycle's windshield is damaged or broken, it needs to be replaced. Some windshield manufacturers include installation instructions, but many do not. For most models, removing the old windshield and replacing it with a new one can be done in a hour or two, but there are some Honda models that will need to sit for a day or two to allow the windshield to conform to the shape of the mounts.
Instructions
Honda NT700V and Similar Models
1. Pry the four rubber covers off the bolts that hold the windshield in place with a pocket knife.
2. Unscrew the four windshield bolts with an Allen wrench. Set the bolts aside.
3. Remove the old windshield and set it aside.
4. Place the new windshield in position and reinstall the four bolts. Carefully tighten the bolts; over-tightening can crack the glass.
5. Add the plastic gaskets--included with the new windshield--to the bolts. Replace the rubber bolt covers.
Honda ST1300 and Similar Models
6. Pry the four rubber bolt covers off the windshield bolts. Use a pocket knife to gently pull off the covers.
7. Unscrew the four windshield bolts with an Allen wrench. Do not remove the rubber gasket.
8. Remove the old windshield and place the new windshield into position against the windshield mounts. Replace the top two bolts only.
9. Push the bottom section of the new windshield into position. You may need to use a little pressure because the shape of the new windshield has not formed to match the curve of the mounting brackets.
10. Replace the remaining two bolts and rubber covers. Do not over-tighten the bolts. The windshield will curve to match the mounting brackets in about two days; during this time, keep the bike in an area where the temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit or higher to prevent damage to the windshield.
Honda Gold Wing and Similar Models
11. Raise the height lever for the windshield so that it is all the way up. Gently pull the rubber boots toward the mirrors on each side.
12. Push both the mirrors forward, one at a time. This will expose a nut, one per side, for the height levers. Remove the nuts, taking extreme caution not to drop them.
13. Wrap a cloth rag around a flat head screwdriver and use it to carefully pry upward on the windshield garnish on the section between the headlights. Lift the garnish up, like a car hood, and prop it up with a screwdriver if necessary.
14. Rotate the now exposed cover piece 180 degrees to access the bolt below. Remove this bolt with a wrench and lift off the whole garnish section.
15. Remove the Phillips and Allen head screws that secure the windshield in place. There will be two Allen head screws and either two or four Phillips head screws, depending on the model-year of your Honda motorcycle. Lift off the windshield when all the screws are removed.
16. Replace any of the tape material along the mounting perimeter that may be damaged if necessary. Remove the old Velcro strip if there is one on your model. For models that have this strip, it is located where the windshield and dash meet. Add a new Velcro strip into position if your model requires it.
17.Place the new windshield into position, secure the bolts you removed previously and raise the shield completely. If your adjuster has a "4" setting, you will only be able to reattach all the pieces on the adjustments that are fourth or fifth from the bottom.
18. Reassemble the remaining pieces in the opposite order of removal. Start with the Phillips/Allen head screws, then replace the garnish and the bolt. Turn the cover piece back to its original position then spray the bosses underneath the garnish. Lower the garnish into position.
19. Replace the two nuts that go behind the mirrors and push the mirrors back into position. Push the rubber boots back into place and lower the height levels.
