Harley-Davidson used a turn signal module to control the turn signal functions on the 2009 Heritage Softail model. The TSM receives input from the turn signal switches, and controls power flow to the front and rear turn signals. A built-in bank angle sensor determines when the bike has completed a turn and automatically cancels the turn signal. A 15-amp fuse located in the fuse box under the seat protects the turn signal circuit. A failure in either of these components can cause the turn signals to stop working.
Instructions
1. Remove the passenger seat mounting screw, using a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the passenger seat off the bike.
2. Remove the two rider seat bolts, using a ratchet and socket. Lift the rear of the rider seat and slide it toward the rear of the bike to disengage the seat tang from the frame. Lift the rider seat off the bike.
3. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery, using a 10 mm wrench.
4. Remove the cover from the fuse box. Locate the lights fuse in the "6" slot, at the top left corner of the right fuse group. Remove and inspect the fuse. Replace the fuse with a new 15-amp fuse if it is blown. Install the fuse box cover.
5. Install the negative battery cable using a 10 mm wrench and test the turn signals. Proceed to step 6 if the signals still do not work. Skip to step 14 if the signals work.
6. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
7. Open the right saddlebag. Remove the two saddlebag retaining nuts, using a ratchet and socket. Pull the right saddlebag off the bike.
8. Locate the splash guard at the front edge of the rear fender, between the rear tire and the transmission. Remove the bolt from the lower edge of the splash guard, using a ratchet and socket.
9. Lift up on the splash guard tabs and pull the lower edge of the splash guard toward the rear tire. Pull the upper edge of the splash guard off the rear fork and remove the splash guard from the bike to expose the electrical panel.
10. Remove the TSM from the electrical panel and install a new module.
11. Snap the upper edge of the splash guard into place. Snap the lower edge of the splash guard into place. Install and tighten the splash guard screw to 36 to 48 inch-pounds, using an inch-pound torque wrench and socket.
12. Install the right-side saddlebag and retaining nuts, using a ratchet and socket.
13. Install the negative battery cable using a 10 mm wrench and test the turn signals.
14. Place the rider seat on the bike. Lift the rear of the rider seat while sliding the seat forward to engage the tang in the frame. Lower the rear of the rider seat and install the seat mounting bolts, using a ratchet and socket.
15. Engage the passenger seat with the rider seat mounting tab, if applicable. Install the passenger seat mounting screw, using a Phillips screwdriver.
