Measure carefully before cutting the molding.
Baseboards and shoe mold make up the typical floor molding package used in homes. Floor molding helps cover the gap between the drywall or wall cladding and the floor. Nail baseboards to the wall close to the floor from the entry door casing all the way around the room. Install shoe molding at the bottom of the baseboard to cover the gap between the floor and the baseboard. Cut all inside and outside corners on a miter saw to properly fit in the corners. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Set up the miter saw. Push the saw all the way into the carriage and lock the slide, if so equipped. Loosen the fence adjusters by hand or with a wrench and move the fences all the way to the end of their travel toward the center of the saw. Ensure that the tilt mechanism is set to the vertical, or 90-degree position, and locked securely.
2. Mark the measurements onto the molding, using a tape measure and a razor knife. Nick the top edge of the board lightly with the knife.
3. Set the angle of the saw for the first cut. Cut the square ends with a miter setting of zero. Cut inside miters (for inside corners) at 45 degrees with the long point on the back of the molding. Cut outside corners at 45 degrees with the long point on the face of the molding.
4. Hold the molding tightly against the backstop of the saw. Ensure that the molding is in a plane with the deck and the backstop. Lower the blade of the saw without starting the saw. Line the knife mark up with the edge of the miter saw blade.
5. Raise the miter saw blade and pull the trigger to start the saw. Push the miter saw down and through the molding with one smooth, continuous motion. Do not hesitate or flinch once the saw is engaged in the wood or the cut will be rough and the joint will turn out poorly. Hold the saw down and move the molding back away from the blade slightly before raising the saw blade and releasing the trigger.
