1979 Models
Harley-Davidson's 1979 models were the Electra Glide, Super Glide, Low Rider, Sportster, Shovelhead and Fat Boy. Theses six models were available with three engine sizes: 1000cc, 1200cc, and 1340cc. All three power plants were two-cylinder, four-stroke, air-cooled engines with five-speed transmissions. With the exception of the XLH 1000 Sportster, all of the 1979 crankcases were similar.
Crankcase Oil Types
Harley-Davidson service representatives in Sanford, Florida, strongly recommend using 60-weight crankcase oil in the summer and 50-weight crankcase oil in the winter to prevent damage to your Harley.
Maintenance Frequency
Crankcase oil should be changed every other oil change, that is, is every 5,000 miles.
Crankcase Capacities
The 1979 XLH 1000 Sportster requires one quart of oil. All other models require 29 to 30 ounces, depending on the amount of oil that drains when servicing.
