Tips On Cleaning Chrome On Harleydavidson Motorcycles

Sparkling chrome on a Harley-Davidson is the sign of a well-kept motorcycle.

There is no other way to experience the open road and the wind in your hair quite like hopping on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and taking off down the highway. If you have invested in a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, you already know that to keep it looking its best requires some serious maintenance and cleaning. Polishing regularly will remove the surface oxidation and prevent rust from developing. Plus, lackluster chrome is hardly something to be proud of, so try any of these tips on cleaning chrome on Harley-Davidson motorcycles to keep your hog bright and shiny.

Wenol Auto and Motorcycle Polish

Developed more than 30 years ago in Germany, this polish in a blue tube is well-known to American motorcycle and auto enthusiasts because it contains no toxic elements and is completely safe to use on coated metals. Wenol Auto and Motorcycle Polish is specifically designed to protect your chrome from water spotting and corrosion, and it is strong enough to remove surface oxidation.

Flitz Metal Polish, Fiberglass and Paint Restorer

Flitz Metal Polish, Fiberglass and Paint Restorer is a great pre-treatment before polishing your Harley's chrome if it is suffering from heavy oxidation. Its nontoxic, nonabrasive formula will protect your chrome for up to six months in a fresh water environment and up to three months in a salt water environment. This heavy-duty polish with many uses will easily remove everything from tarnish and rust to tree sap and lime deposits.

White Vinegar and Baking Soda

This classic household cleaning formula has yet another use: polishing and cleaning the chrome on your Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Mix some about 1 cup of vinegar with a few teaspoons of baking soda and wait for it to fizz. Then pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Spray the chrome on your Harley, then buff it with a dry cloth for super shiny chrome.

Ammonia and Water

Clean the chrome on your motorcycle by using a recipe of ammonia and water. Mix between 1/2 cup to 1 cup of ammonia per gallon of water and use it to wash the chrome, then follow with a clean water rinse. The amount of ammonia to use depends on the cleaning strength needed. If the motorcycle's chrome is extremely dirty, then opt for 1 cup of ammonia per gallon of water. Use a soft cloth to buff and dry the chrome. If you have any stubborn spots left, try spot cleaning with some pure ammonia and then repeat the process.
