HD Radio digital technology guarantees you'll hear FM stations at CD-quality levels, while AM will retain the old audio quality of FM. If you want to start your own radio station, setting up one for HD Radio is the way to go.
Instructions
1. Apply for a radio station. You'll need to contact the Federal Communications Commission and inform it about your request. Application requirements include a completed FCC Form 605 along with a Proof of Passing Certificate issued by a Commercial Operator License Examination Manager. Also, inform the FCC that you want to broadcast in HD Radio format and ask whether any other paperwork or procedures are necessary for your local market.
2. Construct the radio station in order to make it broadcast-ready. You'll need basic equipment such as the microphone, tape deck and computer as well as the equipment needed to send an HD signal. You'll need an HD transmitter. Hire an engineer or two to assemble the studio. Engineers know establish the sound and maintain a broadcast signal.
3. Decide on a name and advertise. Try to find a catchy name--radio stations are well-known for their quick names and slogans. Try to make it rhyme with your frequency, such as "Da Time on 99.9" or "Sons of More on 92.4." Get the word out in the local newspaper and set up a grand opening with contests and prizes.
4. Apply for the proper music licenses and pay any royalties. You cannot just play whatever music you would like. You need to stick with a niche--"Top 40," "Classic Rock," "Modern Hip-Hop"--and find out what you'll have to pay to earn broadcasting rights. Hire a music director to create the playlist and discover music that is appropriate for your niche.
5. Hire DJs and salespeople. Try to find dominant personalities for your DJs--people who are not afraid to say anything and have a quick wit. It's advisable to find DJs with strong, booming voices because their talent is their voice, not their physical appearance. Hire salespeople to sell advertising for the station and accountants to handle the station's budget.
