Back Up Itunes To A Wd Passport

Over time, avid users of Apple iTunes often accumulate hundreds, if not thousands, of digital music tracks. By default, iTunes stores digital music on the "C:\" drive, or main hard drive, of your PC. Building a large iTunes collection is both time consuming and expensive. Leaving your iTunes investment vulnerable to a virus attack or hard drive crash is something you can avoid by connecting a WD Passport drive to your PC and backing up the files. In the event of an emergency, you can use the external drive to restore your music collection quickly and easily.

Instructions

1. Close iTunes by clicking "File," then "Exit" on the menu bar. If you simply click the "X" in the program windows, the application minimizes to the quick launch section of the taskbar. Therefore, use the "Exit" method to close the application.

2. Connect the small end of the USB cable to the WD Passport drive and the larger end to an available USB port on your computer. Wait a few seconds for Windows to detect the Passport drive and configure it as a removable storage device on your PC.

3. Launch iTunes again on your computer. Click "Edit" on the menu bar, then "Preferences."

4. Click the "Advanced" tab, then the "Change" button next to the "iTunes Music Folder location" field. A new window appears that allows you to change the music folder.

5. Click "My Computer," then "External Hard Drive." Wait a few seconds for iTunes to detect the Passport drive and enable the "OK" button in the window. Once the "OK" button is active, click it. Click "OK" again to change library location in iTunes.

6. Click "File," then "Library" on the menu bar. In the pop-up menu, click "Organize Library."

7. Click and enable the "Consolidate Files" option, then click "OK." Click the "Consolidate" button when prompted to back up your music and media files to the Passport drive. After iTunes finishes copying the files, disconnect the Passport drive from your computer.
