Install A Choke Cable On A Harleydavidson Sportster 883

Install a Choke Cable on a Harley-Davidson Sportster 883

Harley-Davidson Motor Company equipped their 883 Sportster models with Keihin constant velocity (CV) carburetors. An enrichening circuit aides cold starts by atomizing and injecting extra fuel and air behind the butterfly valve and into the intake manifold. Tension on the choke cable mounting nut puts a slight drag on the cable and enables the rider to set the choke cable to full or half position. The choke cable comes with the enrichener needle valve attached as a unit.

Instructions

1. Locate the enrichener valve port at the upper left side, toward the rear of the carburetor.

2. Align the needle valve with the needle passage at the back of the carburetor and slide it into its recess.

3. Thread the choke cable nut into the carburetor and tighten it securely with a wrench. Do not over tighten or cross-thread the cable nut.

4. Slide the choke knob and cable assembly into its slot in the ignition bracket. Tighten the clamp nut on the backside of the assembly by hand, then tighten it up another 1/8 turn with an 11/16-inch wrench. Test the choke to ensure that the travel and drag feels right and the choke will stay where it is set.
