You don't need an HDTV to use your PS3.
Next-generation video game systems, such as the Sony PlayStation 3, are designed for high-definition televisions. This does not mean you can't connect the PS3 to a standard-definition TV, though. When hooked up, however, you just aren't going to experience the HD video and audio quality. To ensure you receive the best video quality possible you need to use the component cables provided with the PS3. This is the highest quality cable connection available for SD television screens.
Instructions
1. Plug the single, rectangular end of the component audio/video cables into the "Audio/Video Out" port on the PS3. The port is marked "A/V" and is found on the rear of the gaming device. The provided component audio/video cable (provided with your Sony PS3) has a single end that connects to the PS3. The opposite side of the cable has five connections, all of which hook up to the television.
2. Insert the green, black and red cables into the "Component In" ports on the television. These ports are typically on the rear of the TV and marked "Component." Many televisions have a green, blue and red connection port. If this is the case for your TV, plug the black cable into the blue port. The component audio/video cables do have two red cables. One is marked "Audio" near the tip of the connection and the other "Video." Use the red "Video" connection for this step.
3. Insert the red and white audio connections of the component audio/video cables into the "Audio In" ports on the TV. These ports are also located on the rear of the set and situated near the component connections. If the rear of your television is hard to see, use a flashlight or even your cell phone to illuminate the connection ports in order to see the correct inputs.
4. Power on the Sony PS3 and the SDTV. Choose "Component Video" as the input option. The Sony PS3 main menu should load onto the television screen. Using the wireless remote, scroll down and select the Settings icons, select Display Settings, then select Video Output Settings, where you can configure your video settings to get the best possible picture for your particular television.
