Fix Distortion on a Computer Screen
A computer monitor displaying a distorted picture is frustrating to the computer user, not only because of the image, but also because many people don't know fix it. A distorted picture does not always require expensive, professional service. While taking apart a computer monitor and servicing its interior is beyond the scope of what most want to tackle, there are some less labor-intensive methods you can try to fix distortion on your computer screen.

1. Try the simplest option first. Check the power to your monitor. Look for a cord that may be burning out or damaged. Check for secure connections, and use a voltmeter to test that you have the proper voltage from your electrical outlet.
2. Reset your monitor to restore it to its original settings. Over time, the settings may have been inadvertently changed, and this can have a major impact on the picture. You can reset the monitor by pressing the "Menu" button on the monitor itself, and selecting "Restore Factory Settings." If you do not see this option, try disconnecting the monitor from your computer and powering it off in order to reset it.
3. Remove any speakers, cordless phone handsets, or other devices from the area around your monitor. They may cause an electromagnetic field that will distort the picture.
4. Try adjusting your monitor's resolution and refresh rate settings to fix the distortion. To access these settings, go to your computer desktop and click on "Start." Select "Control Panel," then "Display." Click on the "Settings" tab and use your mouse to drag the bar labeled "Screen Resolution." Then click on the "Advanced" button, followed by the "Monitor" tab at the top. There you can adjust the refresh rate. Click "OK" and restart your computer so that the settings take effect. You may need to try different settings until you find the one that gives you the best picture.
5. Try reinstalling the monitor driver. Many times a poor picture results from an incorrect device driver used during installation. Take note of the exact make and model of your monitor. Open your web browser, go to the manufacturer's website, and navigate to the support page. Search for the driver for your particular monitor model and download it. Disconnect your monitor from the computer, then reconnect it and check for a better picture.
