Turn Tapes Into Hd Dvds

You can convert old analog tapes into a digital format.

Over time, a tape running through VHS equipment begins to break down, scratch and not play correctly. If you have a box of old VHS tapes stored in your basement, it is best to convert the tapes to some sort of digital format. HD DVDs possess the capability of storing more information than a standard DVD, so even though the standard definition of the tape does not change, you are able to turn multiple VHS tapes into a single HD DVD.

Instructions

1. Install a video capture card on your computer. External capture cards connect to a computer through a USB cable. Once connected, insert the provided driver installation CD, then follow the prompts of the installation wizard to upload the driver.

2. Plug the RCA audio/video cables into the "Video Out" ports on the VCR, then connect the opposite ends of the cables into the "Video In" ports on the video capture card.

3. Launch Windows Movie Maker, then insert the first VHS tape and select "Capture" in the editing program. Choose the video capture card as the capture device you want to use, then press "Play" on the VCR and click "Record" in the program. The audio/video content from the tape now imports to the computer. Click "Stop" in the program at any time to stop the recording process. The video file now appears as a thumbnail on the side of the screen.

4. Click-and-drag the video file down to the timeline, then click "File" and "Export." Title the video, choose a save location and click "OK" to create the digital video file. Repeat the process with the other VHS tapes you have.

5. Insert a blank HD DVD into the burner of your computer and launch the burning software you have installed (typically Nero, Ulead DVD or Roxio). Choose "Video DVD" as the format option, then click-and-drag the created video files into the display window. Select "Burn" and the VHS tapes are placed onto the blank HD DVD.
