Mitsubishi produced the MU-2 aircraft in four models: Marquis, MU-2F, MU-2J and the Solitaire. Each version employed the use of a different engine; however, Garrett AiResearch manufactured every motor for the MU-2 line. The MU-2 line gained a reputation as one of Japan's most successful post-war aircraft for both civilian and military purposes.
Marquis
A pair of Garrett TPE-331-10-501M turbo-prop engines powered the Marquis, efficiently generating 778 shaft horsepower each as well as 5,400 hours of flying -- time between overhauls, or tbo. They allowed for a maximum takeoff weight of 11,575 lbs., a maximum ramp weight of 11,625 lbs. and a zero fuel weight of 9,950 lbs. The engines provided the Marquis with a basic operating weight of 9,985 lbs. and a maximum landing capacity of 11,125 lbs. The Marquis had a takeoff performance of 2,170 feet when carrying only the pilot, 4,375 when carrying an additional seven passengers and requires a landing strip of 1,880 feet.
MU-2F
Dual Garrett TPE-331-1-151A engines powered the MU-2F, producing 665 shaft horsepower each which required 3,600 tbo. It had a maximum takeoff weight of 9,920 lbs., a maximum ramp weight of 9,920 lbs. and a zero fuel weight of 3,420 lbs. The aircraft performed basic operating functions when weighted with 7,200 lbs. and could safely land weighing 9,435 lbs. Its takeoff performance carrying only the operator equaled 2,415 feet, 3,445 feet when carrying a full passenger load and required 1,320 feet to land.
MU-2J
A pair of Garrett model number TPE-331-10AV's powered the MU-2J, creating 725 shaft horsepower that required 5,400 tbo. It had a maximum ramp weight of 10,850 lbs., a maximum takeoff weight of 10,800 lbs. and a zero fuel weight of 9,950 lbs. The engines provided the MU-2J with a basic operating weight of 7,700 lbs., and could properly land weighing 10,260 lbs. The MU-2J had a takeoff performance of 1,870 lbs. and required an FAA field length of 1,770 feet.
Solitaire
The Mitsubishi Solitaire used two Garrett model number TPE-331-10-501M's as its power sources, generating 727 shaft horsepower and 5,400 tbo. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 10,470 lbs., a maximum ramp weight of 10,520 lbs. and a zero fuel weight of 9,700 lbs. The plane had a basic operating weight of 7,410 lbs., a takeoff performance of 1,800 feet carrying only the pilot and required 1,600 feet of FAA field distance to land.
