There are many college options for students near Mooresville.
North Carolina attracts a diverse group of college students due to that state's climate, history and popular universities. Duke University, University of North Carolina and North Carolina State generate the most headlines because of their rich college basketball traditions. There are also a number of lesser-known institutions near Mooresville, which lies 30 miles north of Charlotte, conveniently located off of Interstate 40.
Davidson College
Located just seven miles to the south of Mooresville, Davidson College holds the special distinction of being the first liberal arts college in the United States to offer all students a chance at debt-free enrollment through the Davidson Trust, which eliminated loans in financial aid packages and replaced them with grants. As of 2010, the college enrolls approximately 1,700 men and women and boasts that its classes are limited to 20 students each.
The college is solely an undergraduate institution, as it does not award graduate and doctorate degrees. However, the broad range of majors students study at the college include art, biology, mathematics, theater, English and economics. Students also have the option of pursuing minor degrees within their study and may choose from any one of 14 options, which include chemistry, French, economics, philosophy and religion.
Davidson competes at the NCAA Division 1 level in its athletics programs, which include football, men's and women's basketball and soccer.

Catawba College
Catawba College, a small, private liberal arts college, lies just 21 miles to the east of Mooresville. The college, founded in 1851, offers a broad range of study, with its most popular fields being science and the performing arts. The college is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and enrolls just over 1,000 students as of 2010.
The college offers bachelor's degrees within 40 fields of study, including education, musical theater, biology, environmental science and political science, as well as graduate studies in education. Along with both fall and spring term semesters, the college allows students the opportunity to study over the summer, during the winter break and in the evenings, which is especially attractive to professionals who work during the day.
The athletic department competes with NCAA's Division II and fields teams in 21 sports, including football, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's golf and baseball.

Livingstone College
Livingstone College lies 21 miles to the east of Mooresville in the town of Salisbury and is a historically black institution of higher learning. Four divisions make up the academics at the college: Division of Liberal Arts and Social Work, Division of Business, Division of Education and Division of Mathematics and Sciences. The college only offers bachelor's degrees, as it is primarily a four-year undergraduate institution, but students have the option of receiving an accelerated bachelor's degree within business administration, criminal justice, elementary education and religious studies. These accelerated degrees take two to three years to complete.
The athletic department comprises 12 different men's and women's sports, including football, men's and women's basketball, track and field and men's and women's cross country. The college competes within the NCAA Division II association of schools, although its football program competes within the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
