The History Of The Harley Fivespeed Transmission

Between 1991 and 2006, all Harley-Davidson models were equipped with five-speed transmissions.

For more than 50 years, Harley-Davidson riders had to be content with four gears. The company's four-speed transmission design was solid enough to remain virtually unchanged from its introduction in the 1930s until its retirement in the 1980s, but during that half century, many Harley riders wished for one more gear at the top. In 1980, the wish came true, and the five-speed gearbox would stay at the top of Harley's transmission line for over 25 years.

Four-Speed Transmissions

When the Harley-Davidson EL debuted in 1936, it was equipped with a 1,000 cc overhead-valve engine whose uniquely shaped valve covers earned it the nickname "Knucklehead." The Knucklehead engine was replaced by the Panhead in 1948, but the four-speed transmission used on the EL would remain Harley's primary transmission design until the 1980s. The four-speed gearbox received updates to its case and main shaft to accommodate upgrades to other engine systems, but the transmission's basic design remained the same until it was superseded by the five-speed transmission.

The First Five-Speed Transmissions

In 1980, Harley-Davidson debuted its FLT Tour Glide model, a 1,300 cc Big Twin touring bike. The FLT introduced several innovations, including a new rubber engine mount system that reduced vibration and a front fork that was mounted behind the steering head. The FLT also featured Harley's first five-speed transmission, which was hard bolted to the bike's engine. This new transmission added the extra gear that Harley riders had wanted for a long time, and the fifth gear increased the bike's top speed while allowing for low ratios in the lower gears.

Wider Adoption

Harley-Davidson introduced the 1,340 cc Evolution engine in 1984, and when the Evolution was used in five of the company's big bikes, the five-speed transmission was used along with it. The base model FLH was the only FL bike to retain the four-speed transmission in 1984; and even that changed the next year, when the FLH was modified to use the rubber-mounted Evolution and the five-speed gearbox. The Evolution engine debuted in the Sportster line in 1986, but the five-speed transmission wouldn't be used on a Sportster until 1991, when the four-speed gearbox was replaced by the five-speed on all models.

Six-Speed Transmission

As part of a redesign of its Dyna Glide line for the 2006 model year, Harley-Davidson offered a six-speed transmission on the Dyna Glide models. Like the five-speed gearbox, this new transmission lacks a true overdrive gear, but its top gear has a one-to-one ratio, allowing lower rpm at top speed. The transmission also features relatively quiet helical-cut gears, and all external oil lines have been eliminated from the design.

What Is A Harley Deuce

A Harley Deuce refers to a Harley-Davidson FXSTD Softail Deuce, a softail motorcycle first introduced in 2000. The Deuce was a softail cruiser with new design features, according to Motorsports-Network.

New Features

Although the Deuce had features common to all 2000 Softails, its unique new design included a stretched fuel tank and front forks that were completely chromed. The integrated instrument panel also was chromed, and there was a 17-inch wide rear tire.

Softail Features

As with earlier softails, the Deuce had shock absorbers hidden under a rigid-looking frame. The new chassis and suspension produced a more comfortable ride. The original Deuce also had a twin-cam 88B engine with counterbalancers that reduced engine vibration.

New Colors

Harley introduced some new colors with the Deuce and other 2000 models, including Concord Purple, Sinister Blue Pearl and several two-tone treatments. Harley produced the Deuce for about seven years before discontinuing it. Used models still are available for sale

Male 60th Birthday Gifts

At 60, a man may still have many unrealized dreams.

Though turning 60 is an achievement, most people at this age are still in relatively good health and are eager to celebrate. If you have been invited to a 60th birthday of a man, there are plenty of realistic gift ideas --- and also some unrealistic ones --- you can choose from.

For the Drinker

Most drinkers have a bar or recreation area at home, a room or shed they go to relax or do their hobbies. It is fun to decorate this area with posters of your favorite cars, band and sport memorabilia and other things collected during a lifetime. If you know the particular interests and passions of the guy turning 60, you could purchase something for his collection. A bottle to put on the bar is always most welcome and will never be out of place.

For the Motorcycle Enthusiast

If you are feeling really generous, and the 60-year-old man in question is a motorcycle enthusiast, you could buy him a brand new motorcycle. Check out brands such as Honda, Suzuki, Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, BMW and Kawasaki. As a 60-year-old is probably either retired or approaching retirement, he will have a lot of time to cruise on his bike on peaceful country roads. The children are gone, too, so he will be able to have all his time to himself and his hobby.

For the Handyman

Tools are always a great gift for guys, but at 60, maybe your friend already has all the tools he needs. If he collects tools, then maybe you can find some new design of tool that would be a great addition to his collection. The hardware store assistant can help you if this is outside your area of expertise. Alternatively, there are some great books on woodworking plans, handyman tips and DIY projects.

For the Music Lover

If you are familiar with the type of music that your friend listens to, you could buy him a CD or DVD to play at home or in his car. People with great CD collections are always open to new sounds, and he will no doubt welcome a new CD, whether it is an old greatest-hits favorite or whether it is a new band he has never heard of.

Surprise Party

Throwing your friend a surprise party at his favorite bar or club is another idea for the man who already has everything. Invite a few of his closet buddies and place a tab at the bar so that everyone drinks on the house and has a memorable occasion. Even if he is already having a party to celebrate his birthday at his house, the surprise party can be done one evening after work when he least expects it. It does not have to be the actual day, but it should be before his birthday rather than after.

About The Harley Davidson Fatboy

About the Harley Davidson Fatboy

The Harley Davidson Fat Boy is a softtail bike equipped with wide tires and fat forks. Everything about this bike says "fat," including the gas tank, which holds five gallons of fuel. The 96-cubic inch engine pounds out 90 foot-pounds of torque at 2,750 rpm, giving the Fat Boy a belly-load of power.

History

Harley Davidson motorcycles have been in existence since 1901 when William Harley drew his first set of plans. Throughout the years there have been many different Harley motorcycles. One of the best moves Harley made was to introduce the Fat Boy in 1990, giving Harley the best sales record for the heavier cruising bikes.

Function

The Harley Davidson Fat Boy is a custom cruiser---made for taking long trips without too much suffering on the rider's backside. The seat is large enough for a second person to comfortably ride along on the longer trips. The Fat Boy is ideal for cross-country bike trips.

Types

Different types of Fat Boys were made in different years. In 2005 Harley Davidson created a 15th anniversary Fat Boy custom cruiser with a smaller engine (88 cubic inches). This particular Fat Boy has 88 foot-pounds of torque at 3,800 rpm. While the engine is smaller than the engine in the 2007 Fat Boy, the qualities of the bike are the same---it allows for long cruises without complaints from the driver's various body parts. In 1994 the FXR frame was replaced with the Dyna frame, giving the earlier bikes a slightly different look, though in 1999 and 2000 Harley brought the FXR frame back or a few limited edition models.

Features

Harley Davidson Fat Boys have many different aftermarket options that can be easily applied to the bike. One of the best options is the add-on luggage. Saddlebags are made just for the Fat Boy---the bags can be made from leather or fiberglass. The Fat Boy also has a trunk specifically made for the bike. The trunk is attached to the rear fender and sissy bar and allows for storage of extra items for long trips. There are also many bolt-on chrome applications available for the Fat Boy---from custom air cleaners to foot pegs and highway pegs. Because of the popularity of the Harley Davidson Fat Boy, there is no shortage of aftermarket pieces to prettify the bike.

Considerations

The Harley Davidson Fat Boy is a large bike---just one of the considerations you must take into account if you are vertically challenged. If your feet do not touch the ground, you must be an experienced rider. The weight of the bike---680 pounds dry (no fuel or extras such as bags added) will throw around even a strong person who can reach the ground in an uncontrollable situation.

Modify Vance & Hines Baffles

The end caps are clearly visible on these exhaust pipes.

You can shorten one of these baffles by cutting inches off the tail end with a hacksaw. You can drill holes in them vertically or horizontally. The idea of modifying any exhaust baffle is always to end up with less baffle, less back pressure, more roar and higher flow-through than when you started. But since you are starting with Vance & Hines mufflers it probably makes more sense to simply replace the baffles you have now. Vance & Hines sells performance and quiet baffles for most of its slip-on mufflers and exhaust systems. If you don't like the Vance & Hines baffles, at least a dozen companies, including Cycle Shack, Freedom Performance and LA Choppers, sell motorcycle baffles that will fit.

Instructions

1. Locate the Allen head baffle screw, about 2 inches in front of the muffler's header pipe seam, on the bottom of each muffler.

2. Remove the baffle screws on both mufflers with an Allen wrench and save.

3. Remove any end caps or fishtails on the ends of your mufflers with your hands and, if necessary, with an Allen wrench.

4. Pull the baffles from both mufflers with your fingers or, if necessary, needle-nose vise grips.

5. Modify or replace the baffles.

Where To Get Cheap Luggage

Luggage at the airport.

The price of a vacation quickly adds up when you include the cost of airfare, lodging, food and souvenirs. Unless you plan on carrying your traveling clothes in a paper bag, you might also need to buy luggage, which can be another expensive proposition. However, you can save money by searching for and buying the most inexpensive varieties.

People

Start with friends and relatives who may have amassed a luggage collection from previous trips. Unless they happen to be going on a trip at the same time, they'll be able to loan you a few pieces for free. In fact, frequent travelers may have too many bags, which they may be willing to sell or give to you.

When borrowing luggage, make sure to get all combinations and keys, or you may be stuck with no way to secure your possessions. If only one set of keys exists, have the keys duplicated and give the extras to your benefactors as a thank you upon your return. This spare set can prove useful in case you lose the originals. Be sure to discuss in advance how your friends would like to handle any loss or damage to their bags.

Thrift Stores

An excellent source of inexpensive luggage is your local thrift shop, which you can locate by entering "thrift shop" and the name of your city in your favorite search engine. Your Yellow Pages may also list the stores under "Used Clothing." Although the luggage you buy here is secondhand, it may still be in good condition, especially if used for only one or two trips.

Though most thrift shops will only accept usable donations, test any potential purchases thoroughly. Grab a bag by the handle and walk around, shaking the bag as you move. Inspect the interior for any stains or any loose hinges. Make sure that all blocking mechanisms, wheels and straps are sturdy and working properly.

Internet

If you're not in a hurry to buy, eBay offers both new and used luggage at excellent prices. To locate good buys, type appropriate terms in the search box or look under the luggage category in "Travel." Be sure to factor in the cost of shipping and taxes, as well as the time it takes to deliver your purchase. Include enough time to inspect and return unsatisfactory goods, as well as to buy a replacement set if needed.

If you don't have time to spare, use Craigslist. You first need to select your city from the home page and then enter the word "Luggage" into the search box. This type of merchandise exists under many categories, though you can often find it under "Clothing and Accessories." When you go to pick up a potential purchase, be sure to test it before paying for it as you would any used goods.

Install An Oil Pressure Gauge In An Hd 1200 Custom

Refer to the year of the HD 1200 Custom when you purchase the oil gauge...

The oil pressure gauge is an essential part of the instrumentation on your HD 1200 custom. A faulty oil gauge that displays incorrect readings when the oil level is critical or the oil pump is not working properly could lead to engine damage. The modest price of a new gauge and the relatively short time required to install it far exceed the alternative of replacing an engine. Obtain a Harley-Davidson or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) replacement part and park the motorcycle in the work area to install a new oil pressure gauge in your HD 1200 Custom.

Instructions

1. Park the motorcycle on its kickstand. Turn the front wheel fully to the right.

2. Identify the oil gauge wire and connector above the front wheel at the underside of the speedometer housing. Depress the tabs on the side of the connector by hand and pull the oil gauge wire connector out of the connector at the main wire harness.

3. Loosen and remove the screws on the side of the speedometer cover with a metric hex wrench. Save the screws. Lift the cover off the speedometer and set it aside.

4. Lift the oil gauge and the attached wire lead and connector out of the speedometer plate.

5. Feed the attached wire and connector at bottom of the new oil gauge through the speedometer plate where the old gauge was removed. Fit the oil gauge into place on the face of the plate.

6. Reach above the front wheel and push the oil gauge wire connector into the connector on the main wire harness where the old wire was disconnected.

7. Fit the speedometer cover onto the speedometer. Thread the saved cover screws into the cover by hand. Tighten the screws with the metric hex wrench.

Screaming Eagle Exhaust Tips

Screaming Eagle Street Performance Slip-On Mufflers imitate the exhaust sound of racing motorcycles.

Harley-Davidson's Screamin' Eagle Street Performance Slip-On Mufflers are meant to imitate the aggressive exhaust sound of Harley-Davidson's professional motorcycle racing exhaust systems. The street performance mufflers are street-legal and safe to use in day-to-day motorcycle driving. They also improve motorcycle performance by improving air flow through the exhaust system.

Specs and Compatibility

The Screaming Eagle Street Performance Slip-On Mufflers are chrome-plated and feature a ballistic-shape inlet and embossed branding details. These mufflers are made to be street-legal in all 50 U.S. states. Models are available that are compatible with all 2007 and newer Harleys with XL engines.

Installation

These slip-on muffler kits may require the purchase of additional muffler clamps. To install the muffler, remove your old muffler following your motorcycle's owner's manual. Slide the Screaming Eagle muffler onto your exhaust pipe, and finish the installation by clamping it into place.

Care and Safety

After installing the new muffler, wipe off any fingerprints before starting the engine. The fingerprints can burn permanently onto the metal. Wash the muffler with cleaners that are safe on chrome. The safety of the motorcycle's passengers depend on the correct installation of the muffler. Consult a licensed mechanic if you are unfamiliar with aftermarket modifications. Also, incorrect installation could lead to tickets or fines.

The History Of The Harley 883

When Harley-Davidson wanted to replace the Shovelhead engine it had been using in its big V-twin motorcycles since 1966, its answer was the Evolution, an engine with a new design that solved many of the Shovelhead's problems. When the company wanted a smaller engine to use in its Sportster family, the Evolution 883 was the answer.

The Evolution Engine

In 1984, Harley-Davidson introduced the Evolution engine, a replacement for its Shovelhead engine. Originally offered in a 1,340 cc version, the Evolution engine was manufactured with aluminum cylinders and heads. This construction method had the advantage of being more oil-tight than engines that used different materials for the cylinders and heads, in which the differing expansion rates of the metals when heated could cause leaks. The aluminum Evolution engines were also lighter and more durable than earlier engines. Harley offered the Evolution in five models its first year, including the new Softail.

The 883

In 1986, Harley introduced two new versions of the Evolution, an 1,100 cc version and a smaller 883 cc version. In 1988, the 1,100 cc Evolution was replaced by a 1,200 cc version. These smaller versions of the engine featured a different valvetrain layout than the bigger engine used in the larger motorcycles, making the new engines suitable for smaller bikes. The construction of the 1,200 cc Evolution and the 883 were very similar, differing primarily in the size of the bore, and conversion of an 883 engine to a 1,200 cc engine was possible. Such conversions were relatively simple and less expensive than the cost of a new 1,200 cc engine.

The 883 and the Sportster

The 883 debuted in the 1986 Sportster XLH, and it was offered as an option for every Sportster model through 2005. For much of that period, the 883 remained essentially unchanged, requiring only small changes to the engine case when changes were made to the bikes' transmissions and final drives. In 2004, the mounting of the engine was changed to incorporate vibration-reducing rubber mounts.

Later Models

The 883 was well suited to the smaller, low-slung Sportsters, and Harley utilized the 883 when it created bikes with a gritty, street racer feel. In 2009, the company introduced the 883 Iron, a modified version of the 883 Low and a member of the "Dark Custom" line. Like the larger Nightster, the 883 Iron featured a satin black finish along with low-rise handlebars and short rear shocks.

Hook Up A Bluray Player To Get Dolby True Hd And Dts Hd Master Audio Sound

Hook Up a Bluray player to Get Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio Sound

HD Audio sound is awesome and its only available from your Bluray ( also known as blue ray ). The Sound quality is a huge step up from even the old Dolby Digital sound tracks. But how exactly do you get it? Its easy once you know how.

Instructions

1. Forget about Optical and Co-ax Digital connections.

Those 2 options do not carry Dolby HD or DTS HD.

2. Understand HDMI.

HDMI is the best way to get Dolby True HD and DTS HD Audio.

Its all digital and offers HD video with 8 channels of HD audio all in one thin cable.

HDMI offers new features not found in other connection methods.

HDMI is the connection of the future and today. HDMI carries HD video in 1080P plus it carries 7.1 channels of high definition Audio.

3. Buy an HD-Audio Receiver.

Look for receivers with DOLBY HD and DTS-HD logos on the unit. Also check for HDMI 1.3 compliance. HDMI 1.3 ensures your connection carries the newest technology-features for video and audio.

TIP: The HDMI connection on your receiver can affect image quality. The digital signal passes through the receiver, extracts the HD audio (in the digital domain), and passes the digital video onto the display. The most desirable receivers accept the full 1.3b HDMI signal, extract the audio and pass the digital video unchanged in any way. Better Receivers with upscalers allow for a direct pass with all scaling and overlays shut off. This allows for a cleaner, sharper image.

If you already own a receiver that predates HD-audio but has a 7.1 or 5.1 analog input, you have a low-cost option. You can buy a Bluray player with a built-in HD-audio decoder. This can be an acceptable alternative to buying an expensive HD Audio receiver, but the Bluray player will cost a little more. Please check this article's cautions about this option.

4. Buy a Blu-ray player that is HDMI 1.3 ready. All units built in JAN 2009 or later should be 1.3 compliant.

5. Buy 2 HDMI cables rated as 1.3 compliant.

6. Connect the 1st HDMI cable from the bluray player to the receiver HDMI-IN.

Connect the 2nd HDMI cable from the Receiver HDMI-OUT to your TV or projector.

7. Turn everything on in the right order.

HDMI is all digital so you want everything to find each other.

Turn on the Receiver, then the Blu-ray, then the TV last.

The TV should always be last so it can look for an live input.

8. Play a movie. You wont get HD audio until you are in the movie. Menu screens rarely contain HD audio.

Once the movie is playing, check the receiver front panel for a light that says HD AUDIO or similar. Some receivers use a large blue HD Audio logo, while others may use a similar indicator.

9. If it turns out the HD Light is not on, Check the following.

#1. Make sure your movie has HD Audio. It is always clearly marked on the blu-ray case.

#2. HD audio receivers have many settings. Make sure you have set it to one of the modes that support HD audio. Typical choices are...

DIRECT

DOLBY HD + ...

dts HD + ...

The Harley Davidson 883 Won'T Run

One of these motorcycles will not start.

All Harleys, including your Harley-Davidson 883 Sportster, are fundamentally simple machines. They move because an electrical spark ignites a mixture of gasoline and air in a cylinder. The resulting explosion drives the cylinder down. The linear motion is translated into a circular motion that eventually turns your rear wheel. Your Sportster will not run when there is no spark, no air, no gas, no expulsion of the exhaust that results from the explosion or when any of all that is not just right. If your Sportster won't run, walk up to it and do the following.

Instructions

1. Inspect the spark plug wires on the left side of the bike just above your engine. Trace the wires from a rectangular box, called a coil, under the seat to the spark plugs which stick out of the tops of your cylinder heads. Push loose connections back together with your fingers.

2. Unscrew your spark plugs from the heads by turning them counterclockwise with a padded spark plug socket and a socket ratchet or breaker bar. Remove the plugs and examine them. The spark plug electrodes should be light gray or tan.

3. Clean plugs that are fouled with a nail file. Measure the distance between each pair of electrodes with a feeler gauge. The electrodes should be .040 inch apart.

4. Correctly gap the spark plugs with a spark plug gapping tool, as needed.

5. Remove the Allen bolt and washer that connect a tab on the back of the seat to the fender. Use an Allen wrench to turn Allen bolts. Pull the seat up -- and back -- to remove.

6. Bridge the positive and negative terminals on the battery with a 12-inch length of insulated wire. Ensure the connection sparks.

7. Examine the battery terminals and cables. Clean corroded cables with a small wire brush. Charge batteries that do not spark with a motorcycle battery charger for four hours.

8. Replace the seat. Bolt the fender tab to the fender. Shift the motorcycle into neutral.

9. Open the gas cap. Visually inspect the tank to ensure it contains gasoline.

10. Open the petcock. Fully extend the enricher knob. Start the motorcycle. Push the enricher knob halfway in after 30 seconds.

11. Push the enricher knob completely in when the top of the engine under your right hand becomes warm to the touch.

12. Twist the throttle and allow the Sportster to run. Release the throttle. If the engine dies the throttle speed or the fuel adjustment screw are improperly adjusted. If the engine dies turn off the motorcycle.

13. Unfasten and remove the air cleaner cover on the right side of the motorcycle with an Allen wrench for carbureted motorcycles. Remove the air cleaner under the cover using a Torx wrench.

14. Turn the throttle while you stare at the right, upper quadrant of the carburetor. Observe the throttle cam that is mechanically connected to the throttle with the throttle cables.

15. Start the motorcycle. Use a flathead screwdriver to adjust the idle speed upward until the motorcycle will continue to run without stalling.

16. Turn off the motorcycle. Replace the air cleaner and the air cleaner cover.

Troubleshoot A 2003 Harleydavidson Softail Charging System

A good multimeter is your best tool for troubleshooting your Softail's charging system.

The clicking sound of a starter motor is the first clue that your 2003 Harley-Davidson Softail motorcycle's battery has been drained beyond operation. Even a fresh battery can be drained to near-exhaustion without the aid of the motorcycle's charging system to replenish its charge. But, tracking down the cause of a charging system failure takes a fair amount of detective work, since the problems can be linked to the motorcycle's stator, voltage regulator or both. Take your time while testing the electrical system to prevent overlooking anything that could help your determine the right course of action.

Instructions

1. Remove the seat from the motorcycle to access the battery. Using a multimeter set to the RX1 range, test the battery's charge. Set the multimeter's red probe on the battery's positive terminal first, followed by the black probe on the negative terminal. The battery should have a minimum charge of 12.5 volts. Charge the battery using a trickle charger if the battery's voltage is below 12.5 volts before continuing to the next step.

2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position and start the motor. Using a multimeter set to the RX1 range, test the battery's voltage again while opening the throttle slightly to increase the engine speed to 3000 rpm. The battery should indicate a minimum charging voltage of 14.3 volts.

3. Locate the voltage regulator on the front of the motor between the frame's down tubes. Visually inspect the regulator for damage or corrosion, especially around the voltage regulator's mounting area. Replace the regulator if there is any obvious signs of damage.

4. Disconnect the voltage regulator from the stator on the left side of the motor. Use a multimeter set to the RX1 range to test the regulator, placing the black probe on the battery's negative terminal. Touch the red probe to each of the voltage regulator's pins. A voltage reading on any of the pins signifies that the regulator is damaged, replace it immediately.

5. Using the other half of the disconnect plug on the motor, test the stator for resistance. Use a multimeter set to the RX1 range, placing both the red and black probes on each of the stator's pins in the plug. The pins should have a resistance of 0.1 to 0.2 ohms. Replace the stator if resistance is lower than 0.1 ohms.

6. Move the multimeter's black probe from the stator's plug to the engine's crankcase. Replace the stator if there is any resistance indicated by the multimeter.

7. Check the stator's alternating current output using a multimeter set to 30 volts AC. Connect the red probe to a pin the stator's plug and the black probe to the corresponding pin on the voltage regulator's plug. Start the motor and take note of the multimeter's voltage reading. Ideally, the stator should be producing an AC current of 32 to 40 volts at idle. Replace the stator if the voltage reading is below 32 volts.

Use The 1100rt Center Stand Lift Handle

The BMW 1100RT comes standard with a rather inappropriately named "lift handle" to aid in putting the bike up on its center stand. Using the handle can prove difficult for most new riders because the name is so misleading. Most often when putting a bike on its center stand, you are not lifting, but rather you are pulling backward on this handle to boost your leverage. Learn use the lift handle on your 1100RT to get the bike onto its center stand easily and effectively.

Instructions

1. Put the 1100RT in neutral by pulling in the clutch lever, shifting down to first gear, then pushing up on the shift lever slightly.

2. Stand on the left side of the bike with your left hand on the handlebar grip and your right hand on the lift handle. Push the center stand lever until the center stand touches the ground.

3. Move the 1100RT side to side carefully to make sure that both feet of the center stand are in contact with the ground.

4. Remove your left foot from the ground, putting all of your weight on the center stand lever, and pull backward on the handlebars and lift handle, all in one motion. When done correctly, the bike will roll back onto the center stand with a minimum of effort, and with no lifting involved.

The Difference Between A Knucklehead & An Ironhead

The Knucklehead and Ironhead are two V-twin engines produced by Harley-Davidson.

Harley-Davidson has produced many engines in its history. The Knucklehead and Ironhead engines were named after features of the engine and materials that were used to manufacture them. Both engines have markedly made their place in Harley history.

Knucklehead

The Knucklehead is a 74-cubic-inch (1200 cc) engine that was distributed between 1936 and 1947. The Knucklehead has an overhead valve, V-twin design. The Knucklehead received its name due to its protruding rocker shaft bolts, which give the rocker boxes the look of a clenched fist.

Ironhead

Produced between the years of 1967 and 1984, the Ironhead Sportster is a 54-cubic-inch (883 cc) engine. It took its moniker from the fact that it was composed of an iron head and cylinders. The Ironhead has a reputation of being the meanest and loudest of the Harley V-twin engines.

History

In 1936, Harley introduced the Knucklehead Model E, which gained attention after the engine broke previous distance records. The last of the Knuckleheads was produced in 1947, leading the way to Harley's Panhead engine. The Ironhead Model XL was introduced in 1957. The Ironhead Sportster was produced as a street model in 1958.

What Does One Need To Get Hd Radio

The HD Radio Logo

Though the initials have nothing to do with the words "high definition," HD Radio is similar to HD television, using a digital signal to provide consumers with improved quality and additional programming choices. While in many ways a reaction to the launch of satellite radio services like Sirius and XM Radio, HD Radio differs by providing these improvements for free, eschewing the subscription fees satellite radio charges. Consumers need only purchase an HD Radio receiver to enjoy the new service.

The Advantages Of HD Radio

Diane Warren, President of the HD Digital Radio Alliance, a trade group supported by many major broadcast companies, says the new technology is well timed. "In this economic environment, being able to receive all these extra stations around the country for free is immensely appealing."

The new receivers improve the sound quality of FM stations to rival that of a compact disc while the sound quality of an AM station improves to that of traditional FM radio.

The upgraded system also delivers additional programming using a technology called compression. FM stations are able to broadcast additional signals, known as HD-2 channels, that can be tuned in with HD Radio receivers

Many radio stations have used this new bandwidth to provide programming focused on genres of music that are generally underserved by AM and FM radio such as blues, jazz and heavy metal. Other broadcasters have been more creative using these new opportunities to develop programming aimed at unique life groups. Formats on HD-2 channels have been focused on such diverse groups as the homosexual community, immigrants from southern Asia and fans of specific NHL teams.

All Kinds Of Receivers

For people who drive a lot, iBiquity Digital Corporation, the company that developed HD Radio, recently announced that Land Rover as the 13th auto manufacturer to provide HD receivers as an option in new cars. They join a diverse group including Audi, Ford, Kia and Scion amongst others. Listeners can also purchase upgrade kits for older cars in most retailer's car stereo departments. Home and office listeners are equally well covered with a variety of choices, including tabletop and portable receivers, as well as models designed to plug into existing home audio systems.

The Future

Warren says she expects continued growth and consumer adaptation of HD Radio technology, "With receivers available for every personal taste and with innovative multicast stations on-air, HD Radio's future is bright. We're confident that with the broad station selection being offered, people will find something truly unique and consumer interest will only go up."

Replace Rotors On A 2000 F150

Every time you hit the brakes in your 2000 Ford F-150, brake pads rub against brake rotors, creating friction to slow the truck down. This friction also creates heat, and over time the brake pad and rotor material gets worn away. Stock F-150 rotors are made from cast iron, so are very hard wearing; usually they last longer than the pads. Once you have the rotors off, you have a choice of either reusing the old ones, by having the auto center machine a thin layer of the metal off them, or replacing them with a new set.

Instructions

1. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel with a tire iron. Raise the F-150 with an automobile jack; chock the opposite wheels, then place the vehicle securely on jack stands. Remove the lug nuts and then the wheel.

2. Reach around the inside of the brake caliper, and locate the mounting bolts at the top and bottom. Remove the bolts with a socket wrench. Lift the caliper up and off the rotor. Suspend the caliper from the frame with a piece of wire or bungee cord to prevent stress to the rubber brake line.

3. Remove the two bolts that attach the caliper mounting bracket to the brake assembly, and then remove the bracket from the vehicle. This step is necessary only on the front brakes; the rear caliper is connected directly to the brake assembly.

4. Grab the rotor with both hands, and pull it toward you off the hub and over the lug bolts. If the rotor is rusted to the hub, tap it with a rubber mallet while turning the rotor.

5. Prepare the new rotor by spraying it with brake parts cleaner to remove the grease applied during shipping. Wipe any excess cleaner off with a paper towel.

6. Replace the rotor over the lug bolts and onto the hub.

7. Reassemble the caliper mounting bracket and caliper. Replace the wheel, then tighten the lug nuts to 100 foot-lbs. with a torque wrench. Move to the next wheel and repeat the process.

Replace Hydraulic Lifters

Replace Hydraulic Lifters

Hydraulic lifters can deteriorate from wear and tear or the buildup of contaminants and sludge in the engine oil. Lifter springs become weak or no longer travel their full path to return the valves to the closed position. The telltale clacking sound made by intake or exhaust valves is evidence of worn hydraulic lifters and should be checked immediately. New lifters can make an engine run smoother and quieter, and lifters are inexpensive and reasonably simple to replace with some mechanical experience and the right tools.

Instructions

1. Clear the upper engine area of obstructions such as air ducts and wires to allow the removal of the parts. Remove any linkages and electrical connections from the intake manifold and distributor. Remove the bolts from the outer lip of the valve covers, using a wide, flat bladed tool such as a scraper to pry the valve covers loose. Bring the engine to the top dead center position by using the timing mark and observing the rocker arms for the number 1 cylinder. At top dead center, both valves will be fully closed. Remove the intake manifold bolts noting any differences in length and location. Diagram any differences to make re-assembly easier. Pry the edge of the intake upwards to loosen the manifold using caution not to damage the cylinder head surfaces.

2. Lay a couple of rags in the open cavity below the intake manifold to catch debris and then carefully clean the old intake manifold gasket materials off of the cylinder heads. Use a gasket scraper to remove heavier materials. Use solvent and a wire brush to remove lighter materials if necessary. Ensure no material is left and that the head surface is polished. Clean the valve cover gasket surfaces as well.

3. Loosen the rocker-arm retaining nuts until the rockers can be turned to the side far enough to free the push rods. Remove each push rod and inspect for damage or wear. Ensure the oil passage through the center of the rod is clear. If the rods are different lengths, note their order when they are installed. Use a strong magnet to remove each hydraulic lifter from its passageway.

4. Install the new lifters by dropping them in to the lifter passages. Ensure they are all able to turn 360 degrees freely in their passages. Reinstall the push rods and place the rocker arms over the top of each, and tighten the rocker nuts until they are in contact with the valve step but there is play in the rocker arm. With the engine still at top dead center tighten the rocker nuts for the number 1 cylinder until there is a .010 gap between the rocker arm and the valve stem. Bring the engine to top dead center for the next cylinder in the firing order and tighten the rocker nuts until there is a .010 gap between the valve stem and the rocker. Repeat this for each cylinder until you return to number 1. Re-check the clearance on number 1 again when it returns to top dead center, then re-check the clearance for the rest following the firing order again.

5. Install the new gasket for the intake manifold with gasket sealer around any water passages. Replace the intake and torque the bolts to the manufacturers specifications. Reinstall any linkages, fuel lines or electrical connectors that the engine needs to run. Install the valve covers lightly in place without the gaskets and with only one or two bolts each. Start the engine and let it warm up; listen carefully for any ticking or clacking that does not smooth out once the engine oil pressure climbs.

6. Shut down the engine and remove the valve covers. If the engine was noisy, re-check the valve adjustments for each cylinder and restart the engine. If the engine was smooth and quiet, remove the valve covers and install the gaskets. Replace the bolts and tighten to the manufacturer's specifications. Reattach any additional engine accessories, connectors or linkages and start the engine. Check carefully for oil of coolant leaks and watch the engine temperature before the first test drive.

Troubleshoot A Vizio Television

Troubleshooting your Vizio TV will not take long.

The Vizio line of high-definition TVs includes both LCD and plasma sets with modest features at a reasonable price. Although these high-definition sets are far from being classified as "cheap," occasionally problems may occur. Troubleshooting your Vizio TV is a simple process.

Instructions

1. Ensure that the television is plugged in and there is power flowing to the TV when it is turned on. Depending on the model, you should see a light on the corner of the set or behind a "Vizio" logo. If you do not see the light come on, check the power cord and try a different outlet. If the power still isn't working, you may have a blown fuse and will need to have your television serviced.

2. Check image settings. If the screen appears to lack contrast or is a bluish or greenish hue, your settings may need modifying. Use the remote that came with your Vizio TV to access the "Settings" menu. Then slide the "Contrast" "Brightness" and "Color" bars to the middle or "default" position.

3. Look for loose cords. Vizio TVs have multiple inputs, including component, cable, composite, HDMI and S-Video ports. Make sure each of your peripheral devices (including game consoles, cable boxes and DVD players) are connected to the right peripheral.

Clean A Blu Ray Lens

Several products are available to clean a Blu-Ray laser lens and discs.

Blu-Ray players can accumulate a lot of dirt and dust on delicate internal components. Over time, this buildup can affect the ability of the blu-ray laser to read movie and video-game discs when inserted in the machine. This is especially true if you rent a lot of movies and games that are handled by a lot of people, often carelessly.

If your Blu-Ray player returns a "disc error" or "no disc" message when a disc is inserted, it could be that the lens needs to be cleaned. Rather than spend $100 for an electronics technician to do a job you can do for yourself, take a few minutes to learn fast and effective methods for cleaning the lens on your player.

Instructions

1. Buy a Blu-Ray lens cleaning kit from an electronics store or big-box retailer.

2. Turn on the TV and Blu-Ray player.

3. Insert the cleaning disc in the tray, close the tray and follow the on-screen prompts on the TV monitor, by hitting the "play" button when directed. Cleaning time takes about 1 minute.

4. Clean stubborn deposits on a Blu-Ray player by removing the cover and cleaning the lens directly. This should only be attempted if a standard lens cleaning disc fails to work and the Blu-Ray player is out of warranty, as opening the component could void the product warranty.

5. Unscrew the cover from the component by removing the Phillips head screws.

6. Locate the disc tray inside the cabinet and press the "open" button either on the front console or the remote control to slide out the tray.

7. Locate the Blu-Ray lens underneath the tray.

8. Dip the cotton head of a Q-tip in lens cleaning solution or Isopropyl alcohol and gently swab the Blu-Ray lens.

9. Allow the cleaning solution to evaporate completely before testing the player.

10. Replace the component cover.

The Best Way To Modify Stock Harley Mufflers

You can modify your Harley's muffler.

When modifying your Harley muffler, you should consider looks, performance, price and ease of installation. Keep in mind that a successful muffler allows sufficient airflow and reflects pressure waves effectively. Generally, the larger you can make your muffler, the quieter your bike will be, as larger mufflers encourage airflow.

Muffler Modifications

In the past, it was common for Harley owners to modify their mufflers by simply punching holes in them. This isn't done much anymore because it makes your bike far too noisy, perhaps putting you at risk for breaking city ordinances.

There are many different types of after-market mufflers for Harleys, but one of the best selling is called a slip fit muffler. Slip fits are popular because they allow you to retain your stock Harley exhaust pipes while improving your bike's performance and sound. They're also less expensive and easier to install than most other after-market mufflers because they slip right onto your stock pipes. Slip fit mufflers retain your bike's velocity and lower-end torque because you're keeping your original pipes.

Slip fit mufflers are larger than most stock Harley mufflers, so they increase airflow and decrease noise.

Installling Slip Fits

If you choose a slip fit muffler modification, you should check the manufacturer's manual for specific installation instructions.

Generally, you begin by removing your bike's main fuse so that you won't accidentally start the bike while installing the slip fit. Then, loosen the clamps on your stock muffler. Remove the master cylinder mounting bolts and lift up your bike's brake pedal. You should see a locknut underneath, which you can loosen to remove the muffler.

Most models of slip fit mufflers will just slip on your bike in place of your old muffler, and then you can tighten the new muffler with provided locknuts. You've installed the slip fit muffler, so you just need to re-install the main fuse and begin riding again.

The Best Way To Clean Old Rusty Harley Wheel Spokes

Motorcycle wheels should be cleaned every week, to prevent rust and stains.

Nothing can detract from the visual appeal of an older Harley Davidson motorcycle more than rusted wheel spokes. The old chrome-plated steel spokes were standard equipment on most Harley motorcycles, which used as many as 80 spokes to lace the rear rim to the axle hub. Motorcycle wheels endure punishment from the environment, being in contact with the road's surface, which contains salts, acids, water and other contaminants. A motorcycle owner can remove even the most stubborn spoke rust by using some basic steps and cleaning products.

Instructions

1. Find an outdoor paved area that has good drainage, like a driveway or carport. Place the motorcycle on its kickstand, and in gear with the ignition key off. Wet the wheels with a high-pressure water nozzle. Mix a solution of mild dishwashing soap and water in a bucket. Thoroughly clean the wheels and spokes with a wheel brush or a non-abrasive fiber detail brush. Remove as much of the scale, oxidation, mud and stains that you can. Move the motorcycle ass needed so you can wash each section of the wheel that might be hidden under a fender, chain guard or exhaust pipe.

2. Use compressed air and a high-pressure nozzle to remove all moisture from the small joints, seams and cracks in the spoke areas on the axle hub and rim. Make several passes with the nozzle, and move the motorcycle to gain access to all parts of the wheel. Wipe the spokes, hub and rim with a microfiber towel until completely dry.

3. Wear safety glasses and gloves. Apply rust remover gel to each individual spoke with a paint brush, for very heavy rust accumulation. Let the gel set according to directions, which might might be 10 to 20 minutes. Test a small area with an abrasive sponge, to see if the rust breaks down and lifts. Tightly curl the abrasive sponge around each spoke and scrub up and down. Use the wheel brush to clean the spoke joints at the axle hub and rim locations. For light rust, use an abrasive sponge and regular wheel cleaner. Scrub each spoke individually.

4. Use a small pad of 000 steel wool on spoke areas that are deeply encrusted or pitted. Scrub small sections, but do not apply enough force to remove the chrome plate from the spoke. Spray the spokes, hubs and wheels with a high-pressure water nozzle, making several passes to remove all gel or wheel cleaner residue from all cracks and seams. Dry the spokes, hub and rim with a microfiber towel. Let the motorcycle sit in direct sunlight for an hour or more, to completely dry the parts.

5. Apply a paste or gel polish sealant to each of the spokes with a microfiber towel. Rub the polish-sealant into the metal spokes and spoke joints, filling all seams and cracks. Let the paste dry, then remove it with a microfiber towel. If the polish-sealant is a gel type, wipe off all excess with a microfiber towel. Remove any cleaner or polish residue from the sidewalls or bottoms of the tire with the microfiber towel.

The Best Ways To Clean Rust Off Of Motorcycle Spoke Wheels

Cleaning your spokes is part of regular motorcycle maintenance.

Dealing with rust and other contaminants is one of the most challenging aspects of motorcycle maintenance, and depending on what type of wheels you have on your bike it can turn into a frustrating endeavor. If you're noticing a rust buildup on the spokes of your wheels, taking care of the issue only requires the right chemicals and a little bit of elbow grease.

Assess the Wheels

Motorcycle wheels come in a wide variety of materials. Your wheels may be made of chrome, alloy or stainless steel. Additionally, many wheels have been painted to match the bike. If you want to clean the rust without damaging your wheels, you'll need to identify what they're made of and what sort of surface they have before beginning.

Clean the Wheels

In most cases, a gentle wheel polish will be all it takes to get rid of the rust showing on your wheels. Apply a small bit of chrome polish to a clean rag or towel and scrub the rusted spots on your spokes vigorously until the rust begins to break up and fall away. If this isn't working, you may need to upgrade to a specialty compound such as Permatex Rust Treatment, but be aware this may damage chrome or painted wheels.

Follow Up

After the wheels have been scrubbed with polish or rust treatment, go back over them with a clean towel and rub all of the polish and other chemicals off. This will give them a beautiful shine and will help to make sure you've removed as much of the chemical as possible to prevent possible damage. Once the rust has been cleaned, be sure to clean your wheels with a gentle polish each time you wash your motorcycle.

V6 To V8 Engine Conversion For A Chevy

V6 to V8 Engine Conversion for a Chevy

Small-block Chevy engines have been shoved into everything from Ford street rods to Dixie Chopper lawnmowers. Given the availability of V6-to-V8 swap kits, replacing an anemic six-banger with a fire-breathing small-block is practically a bolt-in ordeal. This path is well-traveled and gets easier with every year of development. This project is more about choosing the right components than actually putting them together.

Engine

Before swapping anything out, you're going to have to know what kind of engine to install. It's not going to do you much good to have a 500 horsepower street-devastator only to find that it's impossible to drive because of state smog laws. Many V8 conversions are surprisingly legal in most states, but with a few basic caveats.

In most states, the engine used cannot be older than the chassis for emissions compliance. If your state laws allow you to put a carbureted engine into your truck, then do it. Unless you absolutely need/want fuel injection, a carb is going to be the fuel mixer of choice for cost and simplicity.

Swap Kit

There are at least a dozen different companies that make V6-to-V8 conversion kits that include motor mounts, exhaust headers and sometimes a transmission mount. Advance Adapters, TD/Hedman Performance, Hooker and Stealth Conversions all make excellent kits, but don't for a moment think any of them are complete. These kits give you the parts you'll need to physically fit the engine into the truck, but you're going to have to supply everything else. This includes any electrical components, cooling hoses, radiator and engine accessory drives.

Transmission

The most popular transmissions for this swap are the three-speed TH350 and overdrive 700-R4s. The good new is that many V6s already come with the decent 200-R4, but this transmission should only be used with a bone-stock small block. Anything more powerful will rip the 200-R4 to pieces. Don't even consider using a 700-R4 older than 1986 or one that originally came behind the 2.8L V6. The older transmissions aren't strong enough, and 2.8L 700-R4s have an engine-specific bolt pattern that won't work on a V8.

Installation

This is a pretty straightforward engine swap. S-10s and similar mini-trucks have plenty of room for a V8, and Camaros have always had a V8 option. Simply replace the stock mounts and exhaust headers with those from your kit, drop the engine in and hook everything up.

Of course, how complicated this will be depends on your application. Dropping a carbureted 350 into a 1985 S-10 is a no-brainer, but it gets a little more complicated when you're talking about putting a 2009 LS7 into a 2002. Later-model fuel injected engines may require stand-alone fuel management of transmission management computers. Accessory drives, alternators, A/C compressors and power steering pumps will often transfer between V6s and V8s of the same model year. Fuel injected engines will require a dedicated high-pressure fuel pump and system.

The Best Props For Portrait Photographers

A good portrait grabs the attention of the viewer.

The art of photographing a great portrait comes down to many factors. As well as camera skills and the use of effective lighting, a portrait photographer will often use props to achieve that polished, professional result. The range of props used is almost endless, but some tried-and-tested techniques help turn average snaps into stunning works of art.

Backdrops

There are two main types of backdrop -- mood and scenic. A mood backdrop could be almost anything but is usually a color, pattern or an abstract representation such as the suggestion of waterfall. Backdrops are often made of muslin, canvas or cloth, such as a draped curtain. Often plain white backgrounds are used, with colored light and patterns projected onto them. A scenic background is a large photographic image used to give the impression that the subject is standing in front of a location -- such as the New York skyline or the Grand Canyon. Computer technology is often used with a green screen to insert these backgrounds.

Posing Props

Posing props are objects such as chairs, stools, desks, beds and boxes. It is common to have a subject sit down when taking a portrait since it relaxes him and allows for a more composed shot. Posing props are also used to convey a subject's personality and theme. A bride will often be placed in an archway or on a bed of silk pillows, while a member of the Hells Angels will most likely want to be seen sitting astride a Harley-Davidson. Seasonal posing props are also used during the holidays for a family Christmas card or a special Halloween memory.

Children's Props

Children's props serve two functions -- they enhance the scene by showing the child interacting, but they can also be an important tool of distraction. When photographing very small children it is common for the photographer to hold something like a puppet or teddy bear. This can be used to attract the baby's attention while also keeping her amused. Costumes are also often used, such as fairy wings for girls or super-hero outfits for boys.

Creative Props

Photographers often use their creativity to come up with original ways of making a photo special and exciting. A bucket of water thrown over the subject, hundreds of bouncy balls being released from above, a pillow fight among children, surrounding the subject with homemade cakes, a baby put in a giant flower. There really is no limit to the possibilities when it comes to using props to enhance portrait photography.

Replace A Clutch Lever

Clutch lever

Whether it be on an ATV or on a motorcycle, one of the most common pieces of equipment to break in wrecks and tip-overs is the clutch lever. Luckily, replacing this lever on either type of machine is very easy and can be done, in most cases, in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

1. Pull back the rubber clutch lever cover on the handlebars of the machine. Pull up the cable slightly, just enough to get it out of the way.

2. Loosen the tightening bolt on the clutch cable, using your fingers, until it becomes very loose.

3. Use standard end-wrenches (usually 10 mm or 12 mm) to remove the mounting bolt and nut securing the broken clutch lever. Set this bolt and nut aside.

4. Pull the broken clutch lever up and away from the handlebars. Pull the clutch cable end out of its port and set the lever aside.

5. Place the clutch cable end in the port of the new clutch lever, and slide the new lever onto the mounting assembly.

6. Reattach and secure the mounting bolt and nut, once again using end-wrenches.

7. Tighten the clutch cable using the tightening bolt. Pull on the clutch lever regularly while adjusting it, and get it to the desired tightness.

8. Replace the rubber clutch cover by simply sliding it back down the cable and over the assembly.

The Best Motorcycle Grips

The Best Motorcycle Grips

Keeping your hands happy is one of the most important factors when riding a motorcycle, since so much of the bike's control lies within the handlebars. Different rubber compounds, grip shape and texture all have a bearing on comfort and performance when selecting the right grip. Most grip designs vary, depending on their particular riding applications, so we've compiled a list of the most prominent options on the market.

Oury

No other grip possesses the soft and tacky rubber compound found in an Oury grip. With a traditional grid design, Oury does not offer a wide selection of designs, though it does provide grips for everything from street bikes to personal watercraft. Color options are plentiful, and the grips' unique shock-absorbing rubber make them one of the best contenders in the market.

Renthal

If you've ever ridden a stock dirt bike, chances are high that you've ridden with Renthal grips. Renthals are the most popular grip among motocross riders for their classic waffle grid design and three compounds -- soft, medium and firm. Renthal has always dabbled in the latest technology, utilizing KEVLAR in some of its dual-compound grips. Color options are limited, and Renthals are mainly dirt bike-specific, but many riders use them no matter what two-wheeled machine they ride.

PROGRIP

Perhaps the largest and most versatile grip lineup in the motorcycle industry, PROGRIP's fleet is hard to beat. PROGRIP suits motocrossers, street riders, cruisers, trail riders, ATV and personal watercraft owners and even scooter putters. Color combinations, grip designs and textures abound in PROGRIP's lineup. One of the most popular street grips is the 719.

Scott

Known for its strong contribution in the goggle department, Scott also produces grips. Mostly geared toward dirt bikes and ATVs, some of Scott's grip models can make the crossover to the street. With bright colors and a few designs, Scott grips are worth checking out.

Avon

For bling bling, Avon has you covered. Although Avon grips are more on the pricey side, they are crafted with anodized aluminum and a special knurled rubber compound. Cruiser riders will be happy with the extensive lineup, and the company even makes grips for snowmobiles. If you don't mind spending a little extra on quality and style, Avon might be your ticket.

Grab On

The rare breed of foam lovers will want to check out Grab On's roster of foam motorcycle grips. Specializing in an all-foam design, Grab On suits the needs of the retro rider who aims for a different feel with the twist of the throttle. Colors are limited to black, but designs are eclectic. Foam connoisseurs should be all over a pair of Grab Ons.
